East Jay pulls away in second quarter (10/21/03)

Big second quarters led to a couple of victories for the East Jay football teams Monday.
The eighth grade team scored 14 points in the second quarter on the way to a 26-12 win over Blackford. The seventh graders did them one touchdown better, putting 18 points on the board in the second stanza during a 32-6 romp over Muncie Wilson.
Sam Lyons started the scoring for the eighth graders with a 1-yard run in the first quarter before turning the responsibilities over to Michael Jobe.
Jobe first caught a touchdown pass from Heath Rigby, and made the score 14-0 on a 2-point conversion pass from Rigby. Later in the second quarter Aaron Daniels found Jobe for another touchdown and a 20-0 halftime lead.
Blackford closed the gap, but Lyons scored again in the fourth quarter on a pass from Justin Mann for the final margin.
In addition to his two touchdowns, Lyons had an interception in the contest. Jobe and Mann each blocked a punt.
The seventh grade team (5-2) spread out the scoring responsibilities, with Adam Garringer starting off with a 2-yard touchdown run. Billy Wellman followed with a 2-yard touchdown run, and Lance Franklin scored on a 4-yard run.
Garringer added two points with a tackle for a safety, and Casey Kenney had the final TD on a pass from Dalton McGill.
Wellman ran in one 2-point conversion and threw to Kyle Simmons for another. Kaeleb Hunstman and Kenney each had fumble recoveries in the game.
Fort freshman falter
Fort Recovery’s freshman football team got in the end zone in the first quarter, but couldn’t do it again in a 14-8 loss to the St. Henry Redskins Monday.
Tony Diller scored the lone touchdown in the contest for the Indians on a 31-yard pass from Matt Tobe. Tyler Rauh ran in the 2-point conversion.
Chief banquet
East Jay Middle School will hold its fall sports banquet Thursday in the EJMS cafeteria.
Seventh graders are asked to bring desserts. Eighth graders should bring casseroles or salads.
FR ticket sales
Tickets for Fort Recovery’s final 2003 football game at home Friday against St. Henry will go on sale Thursday.
They will be available in the high school office Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be sold in the middle school office Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Pre-sale tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the gate will be $5.
Basketball event
The Harlem Ambassadors basketball show is coming to Jay County.
The Ambassadors will be at Jay County High School Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The show will be half exhibition, half real game against the Jay County Double Dribblers, a team made up of local players.
Advance tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. Tickets at the door will be $6 for students and $8 for adults.

Baseball tryouts
The D.C. Lightning baseball team for 10-year-olds is preparing for the 2004 season.
The team plays various area teams, as well as some from Kentucky and Ohio. Games are played under high school rules.

Turkey chase
Wayne and Union County Easter Seals will host at turkey chase Saturday, Nov. 15. The event will include a 7k road race, a 2 1/2 mile historic walk, a one-mile fun run and a kiddie run.
Registration will begin at 11 a.m. on the day of the event in the Centerville High School auxiliary gym west of the football field. The kiddie run will start at noon with the fun run at 12:30 p.m. and the 7K at 1 p.m.
The entry fee for those for those who sign up by Nov. 12 is $14 for the 7K, $14 for the walk and $2 for the fun run. There is no entry fee for the kiddie run.
