East Jay spikers top Hartford City in 3 (10/04/07)

The Chiefs were all aces.

East Jay Middle School's seventh grade volleyball team chalked up 20 aces Wednesday on the way to a 25-15, 17-25, 15-7 victory over Hartford City. The eighth grade team also won in three games, 21-25, 25-19, 15-7.

Hannah Ainsworth led the barrage of aces for the Chief seventh graders (11-4) with seven. Emily Devoe had 14 points and six aces, and Rachelle Jackson added 10 points and six aces.

Ainsworth also put up 11 assists, and Devoe and Jackson each had three digs. Samantha Homan totaled five kills, Avery Loyd had four kills and Katie Reier came up with four digs.

The setting duo of Kassi Hemmelgarn and Alyssa Rigby led the EJMS eighth grade team (9-5). Hemmelgarn finished with 11 assists and 11 points while Rigby added 10 assists and nine points.

Mariah Hornaday and Maria Murphy powered the offense with seven and six kills respectively, and Jennifer Dirksen paced the defense with 12 digs. Courtney Myers added four digs, and Kylie Gardner had two blocks.

Schoenlein wins all-around

INDIANAPOLIS - Lizzy Schoenlein set a trio of team records Saturday as she and teammates from Gym City Gymnastics competed at Gymnastic Unlimited.

Schoenlein won the Level 6 all-around competition in her age group with a team-record score of 33.575. She was also one of five local athletes to qualify for state.

Other qualifiers for Gym City were Kristen Simons (33.85), Sydnee Lee (33.375), Katie Witt (33.05) and Alexis Murrell (33.05). Anyone who scored 32 or higher in the all-around competition earned a state berth.

In addition to her all-around win, Schoenlein earned victories and set team records on the floor exercise (9.05) and vault (9.0). She was also third on the balance beam (8.225) and fourth on the uneven bars (7.3).

Witt added a runner-up finish with her 9.075 on the Level 5 floor, and Riley Leavall was second with an 8.275 on the Level 4 floor. Witt also finished third on the bars (9.1), and Leavall was third or better in every event to place third in the all-around.

JC JV 1-2 in OAC

MUNCIE - Jay County High School's junior varsity volleyball team defeated the host Rebels, but lost its other two matches in Saturday's Olympic Athletic Conference tournament.

The Patriots defeated Muncie Southside 25-21, 25-18 in its final match of the day after falling 25-9, 25-20 to Connersville and 25-9, 17-25, 15-12 against Anderson Highland.

Amy Alig finished with 19 kills - eight came in the win over Southside - 10 points and four assists on the weekend to lead Jay County. Liz Walker totaled 24 kills, 10 digs and nine points.

Taylor Burris racked up a team-best 21 points, including nine aces, and added nine kills. Kelci Reed finished with 36 digs and 12 points.[[In-content Ad]]
