East Jay student wins essay contest (01/12/06)

Holly Rittenhouse, an eighth grade student at East Jay Middle School, was the winner of the Mississinewa Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution American History Contest for 2005-2006. A student of Miss Deborah Kilander’s class, she won for her essay titled “Benjamin Franklin - More than a Revolutionary.” Holly is the daughter of Greg and Jan Rittenhouse, Portland.
Minnetrista events
Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie will host an Owl Prowl program for four and five year olds on Tuesday, Jan. 17, from 9 to 10 a.m. and again from 4 to 5 p.m. Come and learn about owls and dissect owl pellets and find out what they eat.
On Wednesday, Jan. 18, a Wings Program for six and seven year olds will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Experiments will be done to find out how birds fly.
Also a Making Kestrel Box Family Workshop will be Saturday, Jan. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. Participants will construct Kestrel nest boxes out of wood to mount in open field habitats.
Minnetrista is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information on any of these programs, call Minnetrista at (765) 282-4848 or visit www.minnetrista.net.
Good Citizens
Chelsea Alyse DeBoy, a senior at Jay County High School, has been chosen Good Citizen of 2005 by The Mississinewa Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She is the daughter of Ms. Tami DeBoy, Redkey.
The runner-up Good Citizen was Thomas Reed Shrack. His parents are Mike and Cindy Shrack, Dunkirk.
Both students demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Free trees
Ten free flowering trees will be given to everyone who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation by Jan. 31.
The six to 12 inch trees include two white flowering dogwoods, two flowering crabapples, two Washington Hawthorns, two American redbuds and two kousa dogwoods and will be shipped at the right time for planting between Feb. 1 and May 31.
