East Jay takes three titles (02/02/2009)

EJMS basketball

The hosts had a good day at the East Jay Middle School/Boomer Basketball Invitational.

The EJMS eighth grade girls basketball team kept its perfect record in tact Saturday with a championship, and the eighth grade boys and seventh grade girls also won titles.

The highlight of the day came from the Chiefs' eighth grade girls (13-0), who held Monroe Central to just two points in the fourth quarter of the championship game to win 30-26. Gabi Cross and Emily Devoe scored nine points apiece to lead East Jay to the title.

EJMS's seventh grade girls were even more defensively dominant as they held Monroe Central scoreless in the second and third quarters of a 29-4 win. They improved to 9-2 on the year behind 10 points from Kaitlin Petro and six by Mikayla Gross.

The East Jay eighth grade boys squad needed wins of 63-36 over Connersville and 39-23 over West Jay to win the championship.

Brock McFarland and Kegan Comer each turned in consistent efforts, scoring 15 and 10 points respectively in boys games. Scott Schwieterman added 13 points in the opening-round win over Connersville, and Cade Price had 11.

In the seventh grade tournament East Jay won 48-39 over Monroe Central to make it to the title game, but lost 55-33 against Richmond Dennis. Jacob Schlosser and Trey Teagle each had 12 points in the victory. Teagle had 10 points in the loss to Dennis.

East Jay's sixth grade girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season 33-14 to Blackford in the first round of the tournament before rebounding to beat West Jay 22-14 in the consolation game. Catherine Dunn led the Chiefs' victory with nine points, and Malarie Houck had six points. Angelica McKibben scored four points in the loss to Blackford.[[In-content Ad]]
