East Jay wins 2 at home (09/23/2008)

Middle school cross country

East Jay won two out of three events Monday as it hosted West Jay and South Adams in middle school cross country.

The host Chiefs edged South Adams for both victories, taking the sixth and seventh grade boys win 27-28.

In the girls race East Jay and the Starfires each scored 36 points, but the home team won by way of the sixth-runner tiebreaker. West Jay was third with 61 points.

South Adams dominated the eighth grade boys competition 19-49 over East Jay. West Jay did not have enough runners for a team score in either boys race.

Starfire runners won each race, with Kristen Muselman first for the girls in 13-minutes, 38 seconds, Brody Shane leading the sixth and seventh grade boys in 11:29 and Evan Liechty winning for the eighth grade boys at 11:44. But Sammi Compton came up big for the EJMS girls.

Compton, the Chiefs' No. 6 runner, finished in 12th place overall with a time of 15:53. She was 19 seconds faster than South Adams' No. 6 runner Devan Eccles to earn East Jay the tiebreaker victory.

Amber Huelskamp and Abigail Johnson finished second and third for the Chiefs behind Muselman in times of 14:04 and 14:37 respectively. Alex Loy was eighth in 15:06, Patricia Hein finished ninth at 15:18 and Julie Valentine took 11th in 15:29.

Zane Shreve was the runner-up for EJMS in the sixth and seventh grade boys race at 13:08, and Jalen Ryder was one second behind him in third. Joining them were Austin Muhlenkamp (sixth - 13:41), Chaz Carroll (seventh - 14:23) and Nick Leuthold (ninth - 14:25).

South Adams' eighth grade boys took third through sixth places to support Liechty's win. Joel Hawbaker was third in 12:15 followed by Andrew Steffen (12:34), Brett Affolder (12:35) and Simon Sprunger (13:32).

Loren Sparks (15:01) was fifth in the girls race for the Starfires with Allison Amstutz (15:03) in sixth, Brooke Kirchofer (15:21) in 10th and Ericka Miller (16:09) in 14th. Behind Shane in the sixth and seventh grade boys race for SAMS were Daniel Velasco (fourth - 13:17), Clayton Rhoades (fifth - 13:19), Isaiah Amstutz (eighth - 14:24) and Cole Litwiller (10th - 14:30).

Dylan Cope was the runner-up in the eighth grade boys race for East Jay in 12:11 followed by Austin Butcher (10th - 15:31), Remington Arnold (11th - 16:07), Kyle Siegrist (12th - 16:27) and Brett Williams (14th - 17:25).

Miranda Gerber was West Jay's top runner as she placed fourth in the girls race at 14:40. Megan Price was seventh in 15:03, and joining them were Jenna Starr (13th - 16:04), Mykala Grayson (18th - 17:33) and Lynsay Buckland (19th - 21:08).

Kyle Murdock was 12th for the Eagle eighth grade boys in 16:52 and Lee Mock finished 14th at 18:59. Keegan Gerber finished 12th in the seventh grade boys race in 14:36 followed by Jess Finnerty (16th - 16:33), Jordan Wood (17th - 16:46) and Jon Lowe (18th - 19:25).

Huelskamp wins invite

SELMA - Amber Huelskamp won Saturday's Selma Invitational to lead the East Jay girls to a runner-up finish.

The Chiefs scored 94 points to finish second behind Delta (27).

East Jay's boys were second behind Selma (37) with 77 points. The seventh grade Chiefs were seventh with 170 points, finishing ahead of Cowan (174) while Delta won with 64.

Huelskamp dominated the girls race, in which Delta runners finished second, third and fourth. She posted a time of 12-minutes, 10 seconds, beating Delta's Andrea Grasso by 21 seconds.

Abigail Johnson was 16th for East Jay in 13:22 ahead of Alex Loy (23rd - 13:36), Patricia Hein (25th - 13:38) and Julie Valentine (29th - 13:54).

Zane Shreve and Jalen Ryder finished in fourth and fifth in the seventh grade boys race with times of 11:38 and 11:43 respectively. Austin Muhlenkamp was 17th at 12:19, Chaz Carroll took 24th at 12:37 and Bryan Schwieterman was 27th in 12:50.

Dylan Cope was the only EJMS runner in the top 30 of the eighth grade boys race as he took fifth in 10:58. Joining him were Jacob Schlosser (36th - 12:58), Brennen Krieg (41st - 13:35), Tyler Wendel (43rd - 13:42) and Remington Arnold (45th - 14:12).[[In-content Ad]]
