To reconsider agreement
The Ossian Town Council decided this week to reconsider its agreement with the Wells County Chamber of Commerce and Wells County Economic Development.
Ossian joins the Bluffton City Council and the Wells County Commissioners in their decision.
Ossian council member Ed Connett recommended that the council request from the chamber a breakdown of how the town's $5,600 annual contribution to the economic council was spent in 2006 and what the economic development council has done for Ossian over he past five years.
The decision comes on the heels of a controversy over the fact that the director of the county's economic development effort had not cooperated with The Broin Companies' effort to site a plant near Bluffton - an effort that culminated with the announcement and ground-breaking for the plant last month.
Historic holiday
The 14th annual historic holiday evening is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Farmland.
"Experience the Magic" is the theme of this year's celebration that will include home decorating contests, luminaries, business open houses, artisans, entertainment, a live nativity scene, horse drawn carriage rides, strolling carolers, a gingerbread fantasia, and holiday wreath silent auction.
Events will be held in front of the city building beginning at 6 p.m. and winners of the home decorating contest will be announced at 8 p.m.
For more information contact Judy Pepples at (765) 468-7030, or the cultural center at (765) 468-7631.
Selling mills
International Paper Co., which has a plant in Portland, has agreed to sell 13 lumber mills to West Fraser Timber Co. of Canada for about $325 million.
The deal was reported Thursday in The Wall Street Journal.
It's part of International's strategy to focus on packaging and uncoated papers, The Journal reported.
The sawmills are located in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas. They employ about 2,200 people.
Phone scam
Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is alerting its customers of a new possible phone scam in which a caller claims to represent I&M or its parent company, American Electric Power in an attempt to obtain bank account information.
The imposter tells customers that they are delinquent in paying their electric bill, threatens disconnection, and asks for bank account information so the matter can be promptly handled.
In each of the cases reported to the company, the customer has already paid their monthly bills.
Should a customer receive a suspicious call concerning their electric bill, I&M advises its customers not to give any personal information.
The companie advises customers but rather to ask for the caller's name and location, and then call the company at (800) 311-4634 in Indiana.[[In-content Ad]]
