Edmundson tosses shutout in Jay opener (04/04/08)
MUNCIE - One inning of offense was enough for the Patriots in their season opener.
Jay County High School's softball team scored all of its runs in the fifth inning Thursday as senior Amber Edmundson shut out the host Delta Eagles 5-0.
Edmundson never let the Delta offense get on track, scattering six hits in seven innings. She struck out three batters and walked just one.
The Patriots (1-0) got going in the fifth inning when Lauren Edmundson and Alex Bunch knocked back-to-back singles to set up senior Trisha Champ. The four-year starter smacked a double to score Edmundson, and Tiffany Davis added a double of her own to score both Bunch and Champ.
Pazia Speed added a third double in in the inning to bring in Davis, and a Lindsey Wellman single plated Speed for a 5-0 lead.
Speed, a sophomore and JCHS's top returning hitter after batting .421 last season, finished 2-for-4. Kayla Phillips was 2-for-3 with a double.
Holly Morris took the loss for Delta (1-1), giving up the five Patriot runs on 10 hits. She struck out two batters.[[In-content Ad]]
