Egg project tops list

Building permits for April topped $3 million, led by a $2 million egg processing facility being constructed by Hoosier Pride Farms LLC.
The construction is part of a major growth project for the Ohio-based company, which received a tax abatement on the project from the Jay County Council. Hoosier Pride is located at 7188 North State Line Road, Bryant, near the intersection of Ind. 18/67 and the state line.
Permits for April totaled $3,051,720 and were issued to:

New director
Portland resident Rhonda Gillespy, LPN, has been named executive director of CrownPointe Senior Living Communities of Portland.
The facility, located on West Votaw Street next to Jay County Hospital, offers 24-hour assisted living for senior citizens.
Gillespy, who previously has worked in an area physicians’ office and nursing home, began her duties on April 26. She also worked for 35 years in the office at Portland Forge.
She replaced Deb Tipton, who had been the facility director since its opening several years ago.

3M Expansion
3M will upgrade its Hartford City location in an $8.9 million expansion.
The company currently employs about 190 people and the nine equipment upgrades will allow the company to maintain that employment level.
The Hartford City Common Council approved a 10-year tax abatement.
Marsh leadership
Marsh Supermarkets Inc. announced that Joseph M. Kelley as the new chairman, CEO and president of the company.
Kelley, 45, joins Marsh after previously serving as executive vice president for Price Chopper Supermarkets. He’s also held senior executive positions with A&P, Bozzuto’s Inc. and Adams Hometown Markets.
Marsh operates 78 Marsh, 16 MainStreet Markets and three O’Malia’s locations in Indiana and Ohio.

Tyson aid
Tyson Foods Inc. has donated more than 270,000 pounds of food this week to aid people affecting by the devastating storms that ripped through Alabama and other southern states.
Tyson has six cooking teams in northern Alabama to help feed relief workers, employers, contract poultry growers and local residents affected by the storms. The company has also provided ice and bottled water on top of meat, poultry and tortillas.
Tyson employs about 2,000 people in Alabama and has more than 340 contract poultry growers who supply the company in the state.
The company has also provided aid to North Carolina, Arkansas and Iowa, which were all hit by heavy storms within the last month.

ATI leadership
Allegheny Technologies Incorporated has selected Richard J. Harshman to become chairman, president and CEO of the company.
Harshman, 54, will replace the retiring L. Patrick Hassey. Harshman has been with ATI for 33 years and began serving as president and chief operating officer in August 2010. He’s also served as executive vice president and chief financial officer in the past.
ATI is the parent company of Portland Forge Inc.

Saint-Gobain results
Saint-Gobain posted a 7.6 percent sales volume increase in the first quarter, including a 7.2 percent increase in its Verallia packaging sector.
Sales increased to 9.8 billion euros, up from 8.7 billion in the same quarter last year.
Verallia, which includes a glass plant in Dunkirk, saw sales increase to 852 million euros, up from 787 million.

Brevini contract
Delaware County wind-turbine gearbox producer Brevini has landed a new contract with Finland-based WinWinD.
Brevini will provide materials for the company, which will have the gearboxes assembled in Indiana.
WinWinD makes one megawatt turbines. Brevini expects to begin work on the contract late this year.

Old National earnings
Old National Bancorp reported a 63 percent increase in first quarter earnings.
Earnings were $16.4 million for the bank, which jumped from $10.1 million in the same quarter of 2010.
The company successfully merged with Bloomington-area Monroe Bank, which will change names and convert to the Old National system this month.

Amishville sold
Geneva-area Amishville recently sold to a pair of Celina men in an auction for $765,000.
Jason Hines and Dennis Strawn, who own Ultimate Power Sports, Celina, purchased the Amishville property, 844 East 900 South, Geneva.
The location boasts 250 campsites, a 10-acre primitive campground, full restaurant, primitive home, manufacture home, campground office, pole barn and wood frame barn.
The purchase also included 50 acres of tillable land and maintenance equipment.

Wal-Mart tops
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. remains on top of the Fortune 500 list, claiming the No. 1 spot over three American oil companies.
The world’s largest retailers beat oil companies Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp., and ConocoPhillips despite posting seven straight quarters of declining revenue.
Wal-Mart was dethroned in 2009 by ExxonMobil, but reclaimed the spot in 2010.

Files for permit
Naturally Recycle Proteins, which plans to construct a dog food flavoring plant in rural Union City, filed for a Title 5 permit with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The permit would regulate emissions from the plant.
The construction schedule for the plant will be dependent on how quickly the company receives its permit from IDEM.

Energy Star award
Verallia North America received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star award for its distribution center in Fairfield, Calif.
The center received a 98 out of 100 points from the EPA, meaning the warehouse is more efficient than 98 percent of other facilities in the U.S.
Verallia is a division of Saint-Gobain and operates a location in Dunkirk.[[In-content Ad]]
