EJMS girls top 3 (10/02/07)
Middle school cross country
Putting five runners in the top seven is impressive enough at a cross country dual meet. The Chief girls did it Monday in a four-team affair.
The East Jay Middle School girls cross country team dominated the competition with West Jay, Delta and Wes-Del, winning with 19 points. Delta was second with 41 as the other teams did not have enough runners for a team score.
Delta won both the seventh and eighth grade boys events, taking the eighth grade race 24-31 over East Jay. It won the seventh grade competition with 25 points, ahead of East Jay (38) and Wes-Del (66).
Amber Huelskamp highlighted East Jay's domination in the girls race, winning by 26 seconds as she crossed the finish line in 12-minutes, 34 seconds. Abigail Johnson turned in her best race of the year to take second in 13:00, and Katie Simmons finished third at 13:07.
Two Delta runners filled in fourth and fifth before LeAnn Horn (sixth - 13:21) and Alex Loy (seventh - 13:25) finished off the team score for the Chiefs.
Delta took the top spot in both boys races while the best effort from the Jay County schools came from the Chiefs' Austin Bentz in the eighth grade race at second place in 11:02. Kyle Selvey of West Jay was third in the seventh grade boys race at 12:33.
Brad Leuthold finished fourth at 11:13 for East Jay among the eighth grade boys.
