EJMS rallies against Norwell

OSSIAN — The Chiefs opened their season in dramatic fashion.
Jason Schlosser scored the game-winning points on a lay-up at the buzzer as the East Jay Middle School boys basketball team rallied to top the host Norwell Knights 46-44 on Monday. The seventh grade team lost 24-17.
Schlosser was one of three players in double figures for the eighth grade Chiefs (1-0), who trailed by 15 points at halftime. Ryan Burkett scored 17 points to lead the team, and Jay Houck added 16.
Noah Hummel and Ethan Myers each scored five points for the EJMS seventh graders (0-1).
EJ girls split
The East Jay girls basketball teams split their season openers on Monday with the eighth graders edging the visiting Norwell Knights 26-24.
The seventh graders fell 18-12.
The Chiefs took control of the eighth grade game in the opening quarter as they built an 8-0 lead. Taylor Homan scored 12 points in the victory, and Britlyn Dues added six.
Brianna Muhlenkamp scored five points to lead the EJMS seventh grade team, which managed just one point in the fourth quarter. Betsy Muhlenkamp scored four points.
Miles wins floor
AVON — Courtney Miles picked up a win on the floor exercise at the Flip For Autism Awareness Invitational, which was held Saturday and Sunday.
Miles, one of four Jay County gymnasts competing for Marion’s Mid-America Gymnastics, took the top spot on the Level 7 floor with a 9.275. She was also second on the vault (9.45) and balance beam (8.975) to finish second in the all-around competition with a 36.175.
Jocelyn Huey was also a runner-up in the all-around at 35.4, led by scores of 9.05 on both the beam and floor. Halle Hill finished third on the Level 7 vault with a 9.35, and Hannah Outcalt posted an 8.85 for fifth place on the Level 3 floor.
