Embarq merging again (11/01/2008)
Business roundup
Local telecommunications provider Embarq will be merging with another company to create one of the largest groups in the nation.
Embarq officials announced Monday that the company will merge with CenturyTel in a deal that will help create extended national coverage and create a synergy between the two companies. When combined, the new company will cover 33 states.
Embarq shareholders will see a bonus as CenturyTel has agreed to offer 1.37 share of CenturyTel per Embarq share, which means about a 36 percent increase over the Oct. 24 closing price for Embarq holders.
The new company, which hasn't received a new name yet, will have an administration composed of officials from both sides. CenturyTel CEO Glen Post will serve as the new CEO and Embarq CEO Tom Gerke will become vice-chairman of the board.
The merger will offer increased competitiveness in the market as well as new opportunities for synergy and an increased financial strength.
Embarq was spun off from Sprint, which had acquired United Telephone Company of Indiana many years before.
