Enjoy the snow inside a warm house

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

Snow; glorious snow. It's everywhere or at least it seems that way. So whatever happened to global warming?

Believe it or not scientists say that all this snow confirms global warming. Huh?

No, really. Way back in the olden days we used to get this kind of weather more often, say every five years or so instead of what we have become used to. Remember all those stories the grandparents used to tell about winter? It turns out they weren't exaggerating as much as we thought they were.

It really was colder when they were children. The average temperature of the planet is now 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit warmer. Such a seemingly tiny change has caused the weather to go haywire if we are to believe the scientists.

Personally, I think the weather is always in a state of flux. Sometimes it snows for weeks on end and sometimes it doesn't. There isn't anything we can do about it except complain; oh, and shovel.

The only problem with shoveling snow is that the wind insists on blowing it back to where it was before. If the wind doesn't blow it around then the snowplows gleefully pile it at the end of the driveway.

Some people actually enjoy snow. They like to go sledding, skiing or even snowshoeing. They build snowmen and look for any excuse to be outside playing in the white stuff. They even go ice fishing. Brr.

Not me. I think snow is beautiful. It makes the world look so dazzling and yet serene. Everything seems quieter when there is a blanket of snow on the ground. But the absolute last thing I want to do is be out in it. It's too cold. I don't want to walk in snow. I don't want to drive in snow. I am too old for sledding. All I want to do is hibernate until the snow goes away for the season.

That is not one of my options. Our society is set up to function year round. I blame it on the Puritans. If they had thought far enough ahead they would have established traditions that required the world to shut down during the worst of winter.

As appealing as that sounds, I know it is impossible. People still get sick and need care, babies still need to be fed and granddaughters need to hear, "Happy Birthday" a day late. We all have a job to do in this world and it is impractical to shut down for an entire season.

Snow requires us to be more cautious and mindful of our surroundings while we are walking or driving. We need to pay attention to what we are doing instead of trying to do too many things at once. If we don't there are consequences to our inattention.

Perhaps that is the lesson a snow covered world imparts. Slow down. Pay attention. The world is a gorgeous place and you belong in it. Enjoy what you have been given. A little bit of change, like being covered in snow, can change our perceptions of the world around us. Snow is beautiful and so are you.

It is most appealing when one is inside a warm house with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book - oh, and a cookie fresh out of the oven.[[In-content Ad]]
