SELMA — An error proved costly on Thursday for the Patriots.
A throwing error on a dropped third strike paved the way for a two-run home run as the host Wapahani Raiders shut out the Jay County High School baseball team 5-0.
The Raiders had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning before breaking the game open on the long-ball, and added an fifth insurance run in the home half of the sixth.
Tanner Reynolds had a double for the Patriots (0-2), who were limited to four hits in the contest.
Wesley Hibbard took the loss on the mound for Jay County, striking out six and walking seven. Toby McCallister and Chaz Carroll also pitched in relief for the Patriots, with McCallister fanning one.

JCHS track wins
YORKTOWN — The Patriot girls track team scored more points than Yorktown and Delta — combined.
Six Jay County girls won seven events, helping the Patriots to 86.5 points. The Yorktown Tigers placed second with 40.5 points and the Delta Eagles were third with 20 points.
Three points stood between victory and the Jay boys, who were second with 54 points. Yorktown (57) was first and Delta placed third (45).
Malarie Houck won both the 100-meter hurdles and long jump to pace the Patriots, who improved to 6-0 on the season. Tasya Smith (100 dash), Emma Laux (200 dash), Abbi Dunlavy (800 run), Abigail Johnson (1,600 run) and Morgan Brown (400 dash) also earned individual wins for the Patriots.
All three Patriot girls’ relay teams placed second.
For the Jay County boys (4-2), Andrew Eley placed first in both the shot put and discus. Zane Shreve was first in the high jump, and Jalen Ryder won the 1,600 run.

No. 2 doubles perfect
Jay County’s No. 2 doubles team has not lost a match all season.
The Patriots are still searching for their first win as a team.
Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes needed three sets Thursday to take care of Paige Jacobs and Cassidy McKinney, but the Jay County tennis team fell to the visiting Bluffton Tigers 3-2.
Westgerdes and Parr, who are now 3-0, beat Jacobs and McKinney 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
In the only other win for the Patriots, Jessica Kerrigan earned her first victory of the season at No. 1 singles, beating Rachel Bertsch 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Morgan Kaufman and Kyra Bruan lost in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively. Kaufman fell to Lauren Stauffer 6-0, 6-1, and Molly Williams defeated Braun 6-2, 6-3.
The No. 1 doubles team of Shawna Miller and Michelle Wellman lost to Sammy Gilliam and Sierra Steffen 6-4, 6-1.

JV shuts out Bearcats
The Bearcats just could not figure out the Patriot pitchers.
Jake Myers and Levi Stant combined to toss a one-hitter Thursday, giving the host Jay County junior varsity baseball team a 7-0 shutout of the Muncie Central Bearcats.
Jacob Geesaman and Austin Beasley both hit doubles to lead the Jay County offense. The Patriots jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and tacked on a pair of runs in the third and four in the fourth.
Myers picked up his second win of the season, striking out nine and walking two in the process.
Stant, who pitched in relief of Myers, struck out three and allowed one free pass.[[In-content Ad]]
