PORTLAND — Errors were like a flood gate for the Patriots Saturday. Once they committed one, Connersville just kept pouring runs across the plate.
Jay County miscues sparked a five-run inning in each game of Saturday’s double-header as the Patriot softball team lost 7-0 and 10-0 in five innings to the Connersville Spartans.
The first game was tied after two innings when Connersville loaded the bases with one out thanks to two walks and an infield single by Julie Hamm. The Patriots (0-4) had a chance to escape, but the first of three errors in the inning brought Lindsay Riebsomer home with the first run.
Jay County managed to get the second out, but then Kayeleigh Buckler made the first error hurt with a two-run single to center field. Two more errors brought Chelsea Flaugh and Buckler home to complete the five-run frame and give the Spartans (5-1) all the runs they would need. They tacked on one run in the fourth inning and one in the seventh for the final margin.
“The first game we just weren’t ready to play,” said Jay County coach Jack Wood. “We weren’t in it at all.
“Shae Keller, in her first varsity start, pitched a great game. Unfortunately we just didn’t give her any defensive support — and very little hitting.”
The Patriots committed four errors in the opener, and were being no-hit until Saffron Redwine led off the sixth inning with a single to left field. The only other Patriot hit in the game was a single by Amber Detro in the seventh inning.
Keller, a freshman, suffered the defeat as four of the seven runs she allowed were unearned. She gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out two.
Buckler finished 2-for-4 for Connersvile with her double and two RBIs. Hamm was also 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Flaugh scored twice and drove in a run, and Kelly Rusterholz had a steal and an RBI.
Lesley Roberts took the win with the two-hit, complete-game shutout. She struck out 10 batters.
Roberts, who took several possible hits away from Jay County by fielding her position extremely well, also pitched a complete game in the second half of the double-header, allowing just three hits in another shutout. She struck out two and did not give up a walk in either game.
“She’s only been averaging about 62 pitches a game,” said Connersville coach Keith Smith of Roberts, who pitched five games last week because of injuries on the team. “She’s been working at her game.”
The second game was a scoreless tie heading into the second inning, which Buckler opened with what should have been a routine pop-up on the infield. But, it fell untouched between pitcher Brittany Logue, first baseman Ashley Bunch and catcher Erica Murray to start the big inning.
Logue managed to get two of the next three batters out, but Connersville was able to come up with the big hit again. Riebsomer, the No. 9 hitter, ripped a double to right-center field, driving in a pair of runs.
Yeager followed with a single to left, and then Hamm crushed a two-run triple to right-center to cap another five-run inning. That total was again more than enough as the Patriots managed just three hits, but Roberts added a three-run homer in the fourth inning for good measure. The game ended in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Flaugh.
Smith said he was thrilled with the way his offense came around, especially with Riebsomer going 3-for-3 with a double, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base from the final slot in the order. Yeager added three hits, and Flaugh and Jessica Bowne each had a pair. Hamm and Roberts each drove in three runs, an Bowne scored twice.
“Our bats had been a little silent,” Smith said, “but it’s early and they came alive.
“We had struggled to get key hits ... but overall, this looked a lot better than the last week.”
Jay County got its lone extra-base hit of the day when Miranda Betz knocked a double in the second inning. Amber Champ added a single in the fourth and Redwine singled in the fifth.
“We came back in the second game and made better contact ... but didn’t put anything together,” said Wood. “We misplayed the fly ball that led to the big inning to start things off. We’re just not doing the little things defensively.
“We’re not getting that hit when we do have base runners on.”
Logue slipped to 0-3 with the loss, allowing 10 runs — five earned — on 13 hits.[[In-content Ad]]
