All area eighth graders are invited to compete for a trip to Washington, D.C., by competing in an essay contest entitled, Grocery Shopping Starts on Hoosier Farms.
The contest, which is sponsored by Senator Dick Lugar, Indiana Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, is designed to increase the attention focused on the importance of a healthy diet in relevance to Indiana agriculuture and how it relates to the food supply. Students should imagine a visit to their local market and creatively describe discoveries of the many grocery items that may have originated on Hoosier farms.
One boy and one girl from each county will be chosen as winners and receive a $50 savings bond. Winners at the state level will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.
Essays need to be 300 words or less and can be typed or handwritten in blue or black ink. Winners will be judged on grammar and punctuation, spelling, understanding the topic, neatness, overall appearance of the essay and orginallity and creativity.
Principals or teachers must submit all essays. Essays must be received by the IFB woman leader in each county by Oct. 17.

CLINIC OPEN
The Jay County Well Child Clinic will be open Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the clinic located at Community and Family Services, 521 S. Wayne St., Portland.
The clinic offers youth and child physical examinations, TB tests, lead screenings and children’s developmental delay screenings to Jay County residents only.
Appointments need to be made for physicals and TB tests.
Families without insurance or who are underinsured qualify. A sliding scale fee up to $20 may be applied for some services depending on family income.

SNACK MAKING
Betty Bagley, CFS educator from Blackford County will conduct a workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at the 4-H Building at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
The workshop, Nutritious Snacks for All Ages to Make and Buy, will provide fun and easy recipes for participants on healthy snacks, whether made or bought.
Call the extension office at (260) 726-4707 by Friday, Sept. 5 to register. Cost is $1 for food samples.
GENEAOLOGY MEETING
The Mercer County Genealogical Society will meet on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Richardson-Bretz Building on West Fulton Street, Celina, Ohio.
The featured speaker will be Jim Bowsher of Wapakoneta, Ohio, who is a teacher, archaeologist, historian, lecturer and storyteller. He has also served as a technical consultant on several historically based films. He will speak on local history.
Applications for First and Pioneer Families must be made by Oct. 1 for induction at the December 2003 meeting.[[In-content Ad]]
