Ethanol plant pushes construction to a high (09/09/06)

Building permits for August represented more than $9.25 million in anticipated construction in Jay County, one of the highest ever recorded for the county, thanks to Premier Ethanol LLC.

As the ethanol production facility at 1542 South 200 West gears up for construction, eight permits were granted on more than $8 million in building projects.

Permits were issued to Premier for a process building, $2,250,000; mechanical building, $1,000,000; scale office, $175,000; administrative office, $400,000; grains building, $1,000,000; distillation building, $600,000; silo grains storage, $890,000; and field erected tanks, $2,000,000.

There were 54 permits issued in August, totaling $9,277,202.

Bradburn resigns

Gina Godsey Bradburn, executive director of the Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross, has announced her resignation from the post.

Bradburn has been with the chapter for nearly 12 years and has served as its director for seven years.

Dr. Robert Hayes will serve as interim director until a replacement is named.

Jay County is part of the Hoosier Heartland chapter.

Chamber meeting

The Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce will kick off the fall/winter series of guest speakers on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at noon in the Geneva Community Room in the Pyle Building.

Wes Kuntzman will be the guest speaker and will address the chamber members about the 4Community project.

Higher sales

CVS Corp. has posted a higher-than expected same-store sales in August, according to The Wall Street Journal. The higher sales were buoyed by strength at their pharmacies.

CVS, based in Woonsocket, R.I., said August same-store sales rose 8.9 percent. Analysts expected same-store sales to increase 7.6 percent.

There are CVS locations in Dunkirk and Portland.

Permits sought

Cardinal Ethanol, LLC, has received subscriptions for more than 900 potential investors through the public offering which was held in order to help fund the construction of the 100-million-gallon per year dry mill ethanol plant.

The plant is expected to be located between Winchester and Union City.

Air and water discharge permits have been applied for, with site preparation scheduled to begin in December and construction of the plant anticipated to begin in February. Cardinal Ethanol is conducting preliminary discussions with a senior lender to borrow the remaining funds necessary to complete the project.

A letter of intent has been executed with Fagen, Inc., Granite Falls, Minn., for construction of the plant, and completion is expected in the summer of 2008.

Smitley named CEO

Greg Smitley, a former Portland resident, has been named president and CEO of MarkleBank, Markle, effective Sept. 25.

Smitley replaces Travis Holdman who was recently named chairman of the board of Independent Alliance Banks, Inc.

Smitley has 26 years of banking experience and is currently executive vice-president and head of lending at Grabill Bank.

Smitley and his wife, Patricia, have three children. He is the son of Charles and Jimmie Smitley, former Portland residents.

Metaldyne acquired

Metaldyne of Bluffton has been acquired by Asahi Tec, a Japanese chassis and powertrain component supplier headquartered in Shizuoka, Japan.

The total value of the transaction will be approximately $1.2 billion and includes the assumption of Metaldyne's debt.

The sale was approved by the board of directors at Metaldyne and Asahi Tec, and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2006.

Metaldyne is a leading supplier of engine, driveline, and chassis products used in vehicles around the world. It currently has 45 facilities in 14 countries and employees more than 7,500 workers and is headquartered in Plymouth, Mich.

The Bluffton facility which opened in 1978 has 194 employees.

Game issued

The Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce has issued an updated version of Fortopoly, a board game that allows players to buy, sell, or trade local properties - all in fun.

The 2006-07 version of the game, similar to the popular Hasbro board game, Monopoly, is ready for pre-order from the chamber.

The first edition of the game was released by the business group in 1995-96 and all 350 games ordered were sold. The new version will sell for the same $20.

New owner

New Body Fitness, located at 121 E. Arch St., Portland, was recently purchased by Emily Goodrich, and has been renamed, Patriot Fitness. Goodrich also owns and operates Patriot Sportswear in downtown Portland.

The body conditioning and exercise location is open Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

The next Portland Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held Sept. 21 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The event will take place at Meshberger Brothers Stone Corp.

Ethanol in Bluffton

The Wells County Plan Commission recently approved plans for an ethanol plant on the southwest edge of Bluffton.

Indiana Bio-Energy LLC plans to build a $170 million plant on a 346-acre site. Company officials hope to have the plant ready to produce ethanol by the fall of 2008.[[In-content Ad]]
