Ethanol ventures move forward with plans (07/22/06)

Representatives of Mercer Energy Inc. recently met with Ohio state officials to discuss a planned ethanol facility in Mercer County between Celina and St. Marys, Ohio.

The company met with officials of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to discuss the process for obtaining environmental permits that must be obtained in order to build an ethanol facility.

Mercer Energy plans to construct and operate a HydroMilling ethanol plant that will annually produce 50 million gallons of fuel-grade ethanol from 18 million bushes of corn. After the facility is constructed, it will employ between 45 and 50 employees, and an additional 100 jobs to support the facility.

If Ohio EPA permits are obtained, construction of the plant will take 16-18 months.

Company trying to

attract investors

Cardinal Ethanol LLC is planning a four-week series of meetings to raise funding for a proposed ethanol plant in Randolph county.

The initial public offering will be between 9,000 and 16,400 shares at $5,000 a share with a minimum purchase requirement of four shares per investor.

The company plans to construct a natural gas fired plant six miles east of Winchester in Harrisville that will use 36 million bushels of corn to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol annually.

Local Cardinal Ethanol Board of Directors members include LPI operations manager Larry Barnette and First National Bank Chairman of the Board Barry Hudson. The board consists of 24 members in total.

Local potential investors meetings have been scheduled in Celina, Ohio on July 25 at 7 p.m. at Romer's; Portland on July 27 at 9 a.m. at the Jay Community Center; Fort Recovery, Ohio on July 31 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall; and Berne on Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. at the Black Bear Inn.

Yum Brands boosts

full-year earnings forecast

Yum Brands Inc. has reported a strong second quarter, boosting full-year earning projections.

The parent of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, Yum reported a second quarter 2006 net income of $192 million, or $0.68 a share, up from $178 million, or $0.59 a share. Revenue increased 1.3% to $2.18 billion. The company boosted full-year earnings projection from $2.81 a share to $2.83.

Croft joins

ACS staff

Abby Croft recently joined the American Cancer Society as a community development director.

Croft, a former member of the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, will work for the Great Lakes Division representing Delaware, Grant and Jay counties along with Taylor University.

As a community development director, she will be responsible for developing Relay for Life committees in her coverage area, as well as promoting the American Cancer Society's mission.

"I'm looking forward to developing new relationships in my counties," said Croft.

"Volunteers are truly the backbone of this organization, and I look forward to working with them to promote the positive mission of the American Cancer Society."

Luncheon scheduled

A chamber networking luncheon has been scheduled for July 25 to discuss the possible bird flu pandemic.

The luncheon will be held at the Jay County Hospital in conference rooms A-B on July 25 at noon.

E-mail scam

targets credit unions

CrossRoads Financial Credit Union officials are warning customers of a online e-mail scam that have targeted CrossRoads employees.

The scam reportedly asks customers to verify or update personal and financial information such as a credit union account number, account password, credit card number, PIN, mother's maiden name or Social Security number through e-mail.

Customers are warned to never supply personal financial information through e-mail and that legitimate companies and financial institutions will never ask for any type of personal financial information through an e-mail.

Indiana University and Ball State University credit union members have also reportedly been targeted.

Workforce board

meeting scheduled

The Eastern Indiana Region VI Regional Workforce Board have schedule a meeting for Wednesday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the WorkOne Express Office.
