JCHS boys tennis

INDIANAPOLIS — Tyler Rigby and Randy Evans could not have asked for much more.

The brackets for the doubles state tournament were released by the IHSAA Tuesday and the Jay County seniors will meet up with the team with the worst record remaining in the draw. The Patriot pair will take on seniors Eric Doerr and Mark Matheny (17-7) of Terre Haute South in the quarterfinal round at Indianapolis Park Tudor Friday at 2 p.m.

Evans and Rigby (22-3) made it to the state tournament with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 (8-6) victory over Greg Milam and Brad Mustin (24-3) of Lebanon in their second regional match Saturday. They are the first team in Patriot history to reach the state finals, and own the record for most wins in a single season.

Doerr and Matheny reached the doubles state finals by way of their efforts in the team tournament. Terre Haute South advanced all the way to the Jasper semi-state championship before falling 3-2 to Floyd Central.

The duos from Jay County and Terre Haute South have each won seven tournament matches thus far.

The doubles state tournament will begin Friday at 10 a.m. with teams from Plymouth (23-3) and Providence (20-0) squaring off in an opening round match.

The quarterfinals will begin at 2 p.m. with the Plymouth/Providence winner taking on Joey Bacher and Phil Luke (24-3) of West Lafayette in the quarterfinal round. The other quarterfinal match in the top half of the bracket will have seniors Corey Kozachenko and Greg Larson (18-0) of LaPorte playing Indianapolis Brebeuf seniors John Beeler and Jonathan Plump (20-2).

The bottom half of the bracket includes the Jay County match as well as Heritage Christian seniors Peter Davis and Robert Mumme (25-1) against sophomores Matt and Zane Smith (22-4) of Center Grove.

Quarterfinal winners will do battle in the semifinal round Saturday at 10 a.m., and the championship match will follow at 2 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
