Expo set this weekend (03/08/08)

The Jay County Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Home Show kicks off this morning at Jay County High School.

The free event features dozens of displays and booths representing area businesses and organizations.

Expo displays will fill both the gymnasium and the commons at the high school.

The event opens at 10 a.m. today and runs until 5 p.m.

On Sunday, Expo opens at noon and closes at 4 p.m.

Joins MainSource

Donald Gillespie has joined MainSource Bank as a retail lender for the Portland market.

Gillespie's new post was announced this week by Doug Loy, market president at MainSource.

A graduate of the University of Indianapolis with a degree in finance, economics, and political science, Gillespie has 19 years of banking experience. Most recently, he has been involved with WPGW radio in Portland.

Gillespie is a member of the Jay County Fair Board and serves on the Asbury United Methodist Pastor Parish Committee. He resides in Portland.

Networking breakfast

The Jay County Chamber of Commerce will hold a networking breakfast Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Dunkirk Elks Lodge, 1026 W. Main St., Dunkirk.

Cost is $2. Jeremy Gulley, principal of Jay County High School, will speak about educational successes at the high school.

Permits issued

A grain bin/dryer topped the list of permits applied for in February at the office of the Jay/Portland Building and Planning department.

John and Mary Overman, 5505 East 100 South, Portland, applied for the permit. Construction is expected to cost $100,000.

Estimated construction costs for projects for which permits were sought totaled $116,000.

Also applying for permits in February were: Michael E. McAfee, 2157 North 800 East, Portland, lean-to, $4,000; Pamela K. and William D. Sewell, 940 West 200 North, Portland, residential addition, $12,000.

Also, Joe M. Eicher, 4211 East 600 North, Bryant, filed for intent to build a swine/confined feeding building.

New director

Community and Family Services Inc. has hired a new director for the Head Start program.

Beth Ralston, who has worked for CFS for 15 years, was chosen for the position. She began working for Head Start as an assistant teacher/driver in Hartford City, then took a teaching job in Union. She later was named education coordinator and was responsible for supervising teaching staff.

The Bryant resident holds a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with endorsements in kindergarten and early childhood. She is married and has two sons.

Jay targeted

Jay County has been targeted by Dunkin' Donuts for new store development as part of the company's national growth strategy.

Company officials said is looking for new franchisees to own and operate a minimum of five restaurants in Jay, Adams, and Wells counties in Indiana and Paulding and Van Wert counties in Ohio.

Thirteen of the coffee and quick-service bakery restaurants are planned for the Fort Wayne area within the next six years in an agreement with HH Restaurant Group LLC.

Geneva chamber meets

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at the community hall at Geneva Town Hall.

Larry Macklin of Adams County Economic Development will be the featured speaker.

Buys software

An Ohio healthcare system recently purchased information system software with a price tag of nearly $500,000.

The board of governors for Mercer Health, which operates Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater, Ohio, recently voted to purchase the M2 Clinical Information Software package. The database system will be used to input and store medical records.

The system is expected to cost $452,387.

Shamrocks for Dystrophy

Portland merchants have begun selling shamrock mobiles to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Customers can purchase $1 or $5 green and gold mobiles to sign. The mobiles will then be displayed at local businesses.

The mobiles can be purchased at First Merchants Bank, Shell, Pak-A-Sak, Jay County Beverage and other locations.

Benefit March 19

Portland Pizza Hut will join other restaurants owned by Pizza Hut of Fort Wayne in a benefit on March 19 for Turnstone Center for Disabled Children and Adults.

This will be the thirteenth year for the benefit. One dollar from every adult dinner buffet and fifty cents from every child dinner buffet will be donated to Turnstone.

Expansion donation

Tyson Foods recently donated $25,000 to the Jay County Hospital Foundation's capital campaign. The funds will be used for the renovations being made to the hospital.
