Fair competitions scheduled (7/12/05)
Taking Note

The Jay County Fair will hold its domestic and culinary competition once again this year. Some of the categories to enter are quilts, knitting, crocheting, needlework, cakes, cookies, pies, breads, canning and horticulture.
A complete list of rules, classes, contests, entry times and a schedule of demonstrations is available at the Extension Office, 504 W. Arch St., Portland, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. All participants must be at least 18 years old.
Ten year members
The Purdue Extension Office of Jay County would like to congratulate its ten year 4-H members.
Nicholas Ehrhart, Amanda Emery, Stephanie Homan, Kent Homan, Janae Horn, Devon Huftel, Erin Lawrence, Emily Lyons, Christina Muhlenkamp, Jay Muhlenkamp, Ashley Shawver, Dustin Somers, Travis Towell, Sean Wilken and Zachary Wolford.
Receives degree
Blake Watson recently received his associate of science in human services degree from Indiana University East in Richmond. To earn his degree, he also completed a five month internship with the Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross in Muncie.
He is majoring in social work and will begin working toward his bachelor’s degree at IU East in the fall. His parents are C.W. and Sharon Watson of Redkey.
Internet class
Ivy Tech Community College will offer a “Buy and Sell on Ebay” class on Thursday, Aug. 4. The class will be held at John Jay Center for Learning, 111 N. Meridian St. in Portland from 6 to 9 p.m. To reserve a spot in the class call Nancy Moser at (260) 729-5525.
Dog show
The Pennville Legion Lions Fair held its dog show on Saturday at the Pennville Park with more than 30 participants. Winning obedience awards were Mackenzie Kelly, Nikki Baughman, Amber Wright, Mallory McKissick, Bethany Sweet, Samantha DeWitt, Emily Blackford and Corinna Craig.
Winning showmanship awards were Tyler Osborne (junior), Amanda Somers (intermediate) and Samantha DeWitt, (senior).
Dean’s list
Indiana University East announces its dean’s list for the 2005 spring semester.
Derek Kunkle, Erin McLaughlin and Christy Robbins from Portland. From Redkey is Blake Watson. From Ridgeville is Laura Clevenger and Susan Edwards.
Students making the chancellor’s list at IU East is Stacy White from Portland and Patricia Jarrett from Ridgeville.
National dean’s list
Amanda James has made the National Dean’s List for the spring semester for the 2004-05 academic year at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion where she is majoring in elementary education with special education. Her parents are Jesse and Gena James of Bryant.
Music at Limberlost
A Bluegrass Jam will be held at the Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Musicians are welcome to perform solo or jam with others. Admission is free. For more information, call Randy Lehman at (260) 368-7428.
Attends conference
Austin Flynn, a junior at Jay County High School where he is secretary of the Student Council, recently attended the 69th Annual National Association of Student Councils in Collinsville, Illinois. He attended training sessions in basic and advanced leadership, communication skills and dealing with diversity.
Flynn went to Chicago where he visited Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Sears Tower, Magnificent Mile and the Cadillac Palace Theater to see The Lion King and to Springfield where he visited the home of Abraham Lincoln. He is the son of Steve and Carlotta Flynn of Redkey
Quilt show
Anyone interested in entering a quilt in the 2005 Swiss Days Quilt Show may bring them to the South Adams High School in Berne on Thursday, July 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A complimentary quilt show ticket will be given for each entry (limit two.) The show will be Thursday, July 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, July, 30, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Also the Swiss Stitchers Quilting Guild is offering a quilt challenge. For more information, send a self addressed envelope and $2 to Neva Pharr, 766 Lehman St., Berne, IN 46711.
Pow Wow
The 7th Annual White Buffalo Society Pow Wow will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Gaston Lions Club Fairgrounds in Gaston.
