WINCHESTER - In the big games, the little things often make the difference.
Both teams displayed good, fundamental basketball in the first half. The Patriots' nine turnovers after the intermission helped do them in.
The Winchester Golden Falcons turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and handed the Jay County High School boys basketball team its first loss of the season, 49-44.
JCHS coach Craig Teagle said he felt his team played without poise from the middle of the third quarter to the middle of the fourth, and it cost them the game.
"I'm disappointed," said Teagle, whose team had just four turnovers in the first half. "Having a senior dominated group, I really didn't think that would be a problem. ... You just can't ... turn the basketball over.
"I hope we learned something from this game."
Playing patiently on the offensive end, Jay County scored the final five points of the first half to take a 26-23 lead. After the break the Patriots opened the second half with a pair of 3-pointers to push their advantage to nine.
But then Winchester star Tyler Koch came up with a hoop, which allowed the home team to slap on the full-court press. That resulted in some Patriot miscues leading to a 9-0 Golden Falcon run.
JCHS continued to struggle against the pressure to start the third quarter, giving up another 9-0 run to lose the lead.
"We only got into the press three times in the first half," said Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey.
"They're the best when it comes to executing their half-court offense, and if that's how we're going to make them play against us, then we're not giving ourselves the best chance to win. They came out and scored early there in the second half and we got down nine ... and finally we got our press to become a factor after that."
After the Golden Falcons took the lead on a Koch hoop with 5:04 to play, they never let it go.
Jay County pulled to within two points twice in the final 1:30, and had a chance to tie the game when they had the ball down by three points with 21.5 seconds to go. But Adam Garringer came up short on a fade-away 3-pointer with 10.3 seconds to play, and Koch hit two free throws to seal the Patriots' fate.
"It was tough when they had the lead at the end because we're not a trapping team by any means," said Teagle. "Our height prevents us from being very effective with that. But I thought we continued to battle."
The game pitted two of the best teams in the area. Winchester, which has now won five in a row, finished 11th this week in The Associated Press voting in Class 2A. JCHS was 14th in 4A.
The Patriots had won 21 consecutive regular-season games prior to Friday night, with their last loss coming Dec. 28, 2007, against Elwood.
Koch led all scorers with 18 points, although he shot just 5-of-18 from the field. However, he went 6-for-6 at the foul line, where the Golden Falcons outscored JCHS 13-2. Half of their 16 free-throw attempts came in the final two minutes.
Andrew Haney also hit six free throws as he finished with 13 points and six assists, and Neal Beshears added 10 points and five rebounds.
"(Haney) is nails at the free throw line," said Mehaffey. "The kid's tough, he's hard-nosed, he played all 32 minutes. ... He's the glue of the team for sure."
Billy Wellman scored Jay County's first 11 points and finished with 14. Adam Garringer and Kyle Simmons added nine points apiece.
Wellman, Garringer and Homan each had five rebounds, and Simmons totaled five assists.

The Patriots fought off Winchester to hold on for a 28-25 victory.
Jay County allowed just two points in the first period and had an eight-point halftime lead, but the Golden Falcons pulled to within two in the final minute. Garret Krieg buried two free throws to extend the JCHS lead back to four points, and Drew Houck and Josh Beaty each split a pair of foul shots for a 28-25 lead with 5.6 seconds to play. Connor Detweiler had a chance to force overtime, but missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
Josh Beaty scored 11 of the Patriots' first 13 points and finished with a game-high 18. Krieg and Houck each added four points.
Detweiler, Quenton Fair and Cole Lawrence each had six points for the Golden Falcons.
