FCC project tops list of permits (06/10/06)

A building permit for a building addition with an estimated construction cost of $2 million was obtained by FCC of Indiana, 555, Industrial Park Drive, Portland, accounting for nearly half the construction costs of new buildings for April 2006.

A total of 39 permits were obtained for projects with total estimated construction costs of $4,024,518, according to a report released by the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department. Another $1.2 million in contruction costs are attributed to two permits obtained for confined feeding buildings.

Brian Homan, 6285 North 1025 West, Pennville, obtained a permit for a building worth an estimated $800,000 and Dan Dirksen, 2991 South 400 West, Portland obtained a permit for a project worth $400,000.

Wal-Mart SuperCenter, 650 W. Votaw St., Portland, filed for two permits for sign construction in the amounts of $8,120 and $3,000.

Preferred Portland, LLC, 1007-1061 W. Votaw St., Portland, also filed for a permit with intent to build a sign in the amount of $4,500.

CR intern

James Brosher, a 2006 graduate of Jay County High School, will be working as an intern this summer at The Commercial Review.

Brosher, a recipient of a Lilly Foundation Community Scholarship, will be attending Indiana University, Bloomington this fall and will be majoring in journalism at the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism.

During his time at JCHS, Brosher served as the editor of The Voice newspaper during his senior year. He also served as a design editor during his first three years at the school.

He was the director of the Jay Today television program. In 2002 Brosher attended a high school journalism convention in Washington, D.C. for a week, where he met CBS Evening News anchor Bob Schieffer.

As President of the German club, Brosher participated in an exchange this year with a school in Kaufbeuren, Germany.

Brosher played four years on the golf team and in April he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout after successfully completing an Eagle Scout project at the Dunkirk Public Library earlier in January.

The project consisted of designing and constructing a new shelving unit for the library that was substantially bigger than the previous shelves.

Meeting announced

The East Central Indiana Human Resources Assocation will hold its next meeting Wednesday, June 14 at the Delaware Country Club, 510 S. Country Club Road, Muncie.

Muncie mayor Dan Canan will be on hand to discuss issues concerning the area, such as the construction of Wal-Mart and Sallie Mae buildings and the Yorktown Expansion.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch to follow at noon and the program scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Reservations are required by Monday, June 12 at noon. Cost is $13 for members and $6.50 for students.

Named Top 100 Dealer

Harvest Depot, LLC, Berne was named a Top 100 Dealer for 2006 by Dealernews magazine, a trade publication for powersports retailers.

The 15-year old competition recognizes delearships across North America for retail design, merchandising approaches, promotional innovations and customer service.

Owners Doug and Linda Schwartz were honored during an awards gala in February and theur business was showcased in a photo gallery exhibit during the 40th Annual Dealernews International Powersports Dealer Expo.
