A $2 million expansion of a Portland industry topped the list of building permits issued in September by the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department.

FCC (Indiana) Inc., 555 Industrial Park Drive, Portland, is building an addition on the west side of its current plant.

In another major project, Westchester United Methodist Church, 4487 East 400 North, Portland, plans an expansion valued at $480,000.

The total value of permits issued by the department in September was a little more than $3.2 million

COMPANY SOLD

Union City Body Co. of Randolph County, which has been in business for 108 years, closed Friday, but the company has been purchased and will re-open on Monday.

Union City Body was purchased by Union City Production Concepts Inc.,

Union City Body Co., which made truck bodies, will now only market them.

PROGRAM

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at noon in the Geneva Town Hall community room.

Ron Laux of Jay County REMC will present “Does Your Electric Bill Shock You?” All businesses are invited to attend.

The event will be catered by Mom’s Soda Shoppe. The cost is $5 for the meal and drink.

MEETING

The East Central Indiana Payroll Association will meet on Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Delaware Country Club, Muncie.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and a program at 11:45 a.m.

Guest speaker is Sharon Bilbee with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. She will be talking about how companies are affected by the Federal SUTA Dumping Prevention Act.

ENERGY SEMINAR

Jay County REMC will host two home energy seminars on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The seminar will provide information to help consumers make educated decisions about insulation and home comfort. Guest speaker is Jill Miller, territory manager from WaterFurnace International.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers will have a virtual seminar on “Experimental Education: Benchmarks and Trends” on Tuesday, Oct. 12, from noon to 1 p.m.

TAX SEMINAR

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce will have a tax seminar on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

Current state and federal tax issues facing Hoosier businesses, as well as a view of what’s to come, will be the topics of the seminar.

GAS PRICES

Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana-North customers will soon see the effects of the rising natural gas prices, on their winter heating bills.

Vectren Corporation estimated gas prices are up 20 to 28 percent this year.

The company said customers should expect an average $150 monthly bill, during the winter.

Vectren serves portions of Jay County.

EARNINGS FALL

Family Dollar Stores Inc. reported a fourth-quarter earnings drop of 9.8 percent.

The North Carolina-based discount retailer also reported a net income of $43 million for the quarter, which ended Aug. 28. Sales rose 9.6 percent, but sales at newer stores rose less than 1 percent.
