FFA chapter earns award

Jay County High School FFA was recently selected as one of two “Chapters of Excellence” in Indiana. The award was created through Beck’s Hybrids and Brownfield Ag News Network to recognize outstanding FFA Chapters. Some community projects the organization was recognized for were the Community Greenhouse and Bridging New Horizons.
Book sale
The Fort Recovery Friends of the Library are having a winter used book sale at the library through Saturday. For more information, call (419) 375-2869.
Deadline
The registration deadline for the Adult Winter Reading Program at Jay County Public Library is Saturday at 5 p.m. Registered participants will be eligible to win weekly prizes, including a Nook HD. Register at the library at 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.
Two Internet classes for beginners will be held at the library. Classes will be Feb. 15 and 27, both from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn to how to use a mouse, navigate a webpage and surf the web. For more information or to register, call Molly Jones at (260) 726-7890.
Spelling bee
Rain Bartlett, a fourth grade student, was the spelling bee champion at Pennville Elementary School. She is the daughter of Misty Beard. She will advance to the Star Press Annual Spelling Bee on March 16 at Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie.
Connor Carr, a fifth grade student, was the alternate. He is the son of Brandy Ramseyer.
Speech winners
Redkey Elementary Oratorical Contest winners were recently named. They were MaKenna Davis, a fifth grader and the daughter of Jon and Shawna Davis and Cole Wendel, the fifth grade son of Chad and Jennifer Wendel.
FAFSA help
College Goal Sunday will be held Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at the John Jay Center in Portland.
Financial aid professionals will be available to talk with students and parents and assist in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, loans and scholarships and must be filed by March 10.
Students should attend with their parents and parents should bring their completed 2012 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 forms and other 2012 income and benefits information. Students, who worked last year, should also bring their W-2 forms.
Students may apply for their U.S. Department of Education Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) at www.pin.ed.gov before the event. For more information, call (800) 992-2076, visit www.CollegeGoalSunday.org or call Debbie Howell at John Jay at (260) 729-5525 ext. 223.
