Taking Note

Several Jay County FFA members recently participated in the 22nd annual Hoosier Beef Congress held in Indianapolis.

Katie Snyder (pictured above) was the overall Junior Showmanship winner and also placed fifth and sixth with her shorthorn heifers.

Other winners were Dustin Snyder, senior showmanship finalist; Kyle Garringer, second place with shorthorn steer and junior showmanship finalist; Travis Garringer, fourth place with shorthorn steer and sixth with crossbred steer; Michael Ault, seventh place with charlois steer; Wesley Price, third and sixth place with crossbred steers; Colton Prescott, fourth place with crossbred heifer and fourth place with crossbred steer; Katie Runyon, fourth place with charlois steer; Kylie Osborne, eighth place with crossbred steer; Tyler Osborne, eighth place with crossbred heifer; Bradley Green, sixth place with shorthorn steer and eighth place with shorthorn heifer; and Bailee Green, fifth place with shorthorn heifer.

West Jay winners

West Jay Middle School recently named its Students of the Month for December.

In sixth grade was Shania Murphy, the daughter of Ms. Kim Towne.

In seventh grade was Evan Masters, the son of Mike and Deb Masters.

In eighth grade was Clayton Scott, the son of Paul and Evelyn Scott.

History winner

Jennifer Braun was the winner of the Mississinewa Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution American History contest for 2008-09.

Her essay was titled "The Ideals of the Gettysburg Address." Jennifer is an eight student in Ms. Kilander's class at East Jay Middle School. She is the daughter of Steve and Pat Braun.

Grant workshops

Arts Place will host a grant review training workshop to assist arts providers and arts organizations in preparing grant applications for funding through the Indiana Arts Commission on Jan. 29, 2009, at 1 p.m.

Library events

•The adult winter reading program will begin Jan. 5 at Jay County Public Library and will continue through Feb. 7. Weekly prized will be given.

•The Book Reading Group is reading Loving Frank by Nancy Horan-a fictionalization of the life of Mamah Borthwick Cheney, best know as the woman who wrecked Frank Lloyd Wright's first marriage.

•Do-It-Yourself Crafts will be Tuesday, Dec. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the library.



Dean's list

•Randy A. Abels, Portland, made the dean's list for the fall quarter at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima.

•Clayton Eley, a 2008 graduate of Jay County High School, made the dean's list for the fall quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

He is the son of John and Paula Miller and Todd and Shawna Eley.

Graduates

Tami Rowles, Dunkirk, recently graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion with a bachelor's degree in nursing.[[In-content Ad]]
