FFA presents awards

The Jay County High School FFA Annual Parent-Member Banquet was held Friday, April 2, in the high school commons with 500 members and guests attending.

The FFA Slave Sale and the FFA Sweethart together made $27,865.

FFA advisors Bob Lyons, Matt Swartz and Eric McLaughlin presented awards to the following students:

Poultry Judging (first in state, fifth in Nation) was Joni Collins, Emily Lyons, Stephanie Rines and Cassie Theurer.

Senior Team (third in state) was Travis Richards, Josh Richards, Matt Minnich and David Minnich.

Junior Team (first in state) was Ben Lyons, Jake Lyons, Sam Lyons and Dustin Snyder.

Parley Team (second in district for greenhand and third for seniors team) was Ben Lyons - president, Dustine Hilfiker - vice president, Jessica Muhlenkamp - secretary, Randy Stephan - treasurer, Dustin Snyder - reporter, Travis Theurer - sentinel, Linsey Wilson, Zack Chenoweth and Dustin Zimmerman.

FFA Scholarships of $2000, $500 per year for four years - Josh Richards and Stephanie Rines.

Dekalb award - Emily Lyons.

Star greenhand - Ben Lyons.

Star chapter farmer - Jay Muhlenkamp.

Also, longtime Jay County farmer Harold Theurer was inducted as an Honorary Member to the Agriculture Hall of Fame.

GIRL SCOUTS TO MEET

The Girl Scouts of Wapehani Council Board of Directors is having its annual council meeting on Thursday, April 22, at the Holiday Inn, 5920 S. Scatterfield Road, Anderson.

JAY LIBRARY EVENTS

The Purdue Cooperative Extension will present a program entitled “The Benefits of Anti-Oxidants” Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Jay County Public Library.

Betty Bagely, Consumer and Family Science Educator from Blackford County, will provide information on the foods that contain anti-oxidants and the effects the provide to delay or prevent some diseases. To register, call the Jay County Extension office at (260) 726-4707.

National Library Week will be celebrated at the Jay County Public Library from April 18 to 24. Children from infants to teens can enter a drawing for door prizes to be awarded daily. Stop by the library this week to enter.

A spring after-school special will be held Friday, April 23, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for children in kindergarten through third grade. Refreshments will be served.

A Teen Advisory Board meeting will be held Tuesday, April 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for teens in grades seven through 12. Students will gather ideas for future programming. Refreshments will be served. No registration is necessary.

BALL STATE CONFERENCE

The Kirkpatrick Memorial Conference on Aging will be held April 15, at Ball State University’s Alumni Center, 2800 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The conference entitled “The Next Fifty Years: The Business of Aging” will feature speaker Harvey Sterns, director of the Institute for Lifespan Development and Gerontology at the University of Akron.

MINNETRISTA EVENTS

The East Central Indiana Rose Society will sponsor a free program to learn proper rose pruning and care will be held Saturday, April 24, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the rose garden at the Minnetrista Cultural Center, Muncie.

The original African-American History Exhibit entitled “Our Land, Our Souls, Our Freedom” is being displayed through September 12. This exhibit has hands-on and interactive stations, pioneer stories, a wagon display and more.

The hours for the exhibit are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The admission fee is $4 for children and students, $6 for seniors and $7 for adults.

“A Visit to Limberlost” will be held Saturday, April 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants will investigate the life of author Gene Stratton Porter in Limberlost Swamp. Naturalist Ken Brunswick will be the guide through the swamp. There will also be a tour of the Gene Stratton Porter home.

Cost is $25 per person, and the deadline to register is April 16. Those who attend should bring a bag lunch.
