Fifth-ranked Bellmont too much for Starfires (05/08/06)

DECATUR — Fifth-ranked Bellmont needed only five frames.
The host Braves, one of the top teams in Class 3A, rolled over the South Adams Starfire baseball team 10-0 in five innings Saturday.
Andrew Caffee suffered the loss as only three of the 10 runs against him were earned. He allowed 10 hits and a walk, and the SAHS defense committed four errors. He also struck out six batters in 42/3 innings.
Lukas Baumgartner had a double for the only Starfire hit.
South Adams (9-5) also played Friday night, falling just short in a 5-4 loss to the Garrett Railroaders.
The Starfires had a 2-0 lead after the opening inning, but Garrett scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead. They came back to tie the game, but the Railroaders scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.
Will Grandlinard allowed five runs — four earned — on nine hits and three walks as he took the loss.
Brent Habegger and Mike Farris each hit home runs for South Adams. Habegger also had a double and two RBIs.
Thomas Masterson added two hits, and Jordan Sharp scored twice.
Loy horse wins
A horse owned by a Portland woman came away with victory in Louisiana recently.
Striking Black Gold, a 3-year-old owned by Sheri Loy, took first in the Alabama Bred Derby at Delta Downs in Vinton, La., Tuesday. The top spot in the race won $37,300.
Ridden by Tami Ann Purcell and trained by Ray Robbins, Striking Black Gold won the 400-yard race in 20.15 seconds. Quick Bubba Ray was second, followed by Wicked Tune in third.
Indians smack Lima
LIMA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s junior varsity softball team put up matching offensive efforts Saturday to score 28 runs with wins of 14-4 and 14-9 over the Lima Senior Spartans.
Joanna Snyder, Heather Schmackers and Carla Guggenbiller each had three hits in the opening victory. Ashley Grube added a pair of doubles, and Kyla Metzger scored twice.
Grube picked up three hits in the second game, and Snyder had a pair of hits and two runs. Kelly Sudhoff, Heidi Tobe and Guggenbiller each scored two runs.
Becca Brunswick and Snyder were the winning pitchers.[[In-content Ad]]
