Fine arts team headed to state
Taking Note
The Jay County High Academic Team recently competed at Richmond High School in Class I competition.
The science team, consisting of Stephanie Byrum, Matt Theurer, Nathaniel Imel, Derek Hughes and Cory Harris, won first place. The coach is Connie Aker.
The fine arts team also took first place. The team includes members Lauren Haggenjos, Amy Powell, Stephanie Byrum and Sarah Garringer. They are coached by Lix Lawson.
Based on scores, the fine arts team placed second statewide and will compete at the state finals of the Senior Academic Super Bowl on Saturday, May 9, at Purdue University.
JCHS also took fourth place in math, social studies, interdisciplinary and English.
Math team members are Thomasina O'Conner, Amy Powell, Shayla Shirk, Derek Hughes and Nathaniel Imel. The coach is Crystal Laux.
Social studies team members are Dillon Corn, Cory Harris and Matthew Shrack. The coach is Dolphus Stephens.
English team members are Lauren Haggenjos, Thomasina O'Conner, Ann Casey and Sarah Garringer. The coach is Gary Tarr.
Story times
Jay County Public Library will have story times on Monday, May 4, 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, May 5, 12 and 19 at 1 p.m.
Story times will include four or five books read aloud and a craft. Children and infants are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Conferences
West Jay Middle School will have parent teacher conferences on Tuesday, May 5, from 5:15 to 7:45 in the gym. Mid-terms can be picked up and teachers will be available to talk to.
On display
Arts Place in Portland will feature the works of artist Paula Dalton of Anderson May 8 through June 27.
The display is titled Mixed Media Fusions of Pattern and Object.
Arts Place is located at 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 a.m. and Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
Summer hours will begin on June 1 and will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
