The bad economy is a mixed bag for dollar stores, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Stocks of both Family Dollar and Dollar General — which have flourished during the recession — rose sharply on Wednesday, despite concerns that dollar stores could lose customers as income levels rise.
Family Dollar, however, lowered its profit outlook for the third time in a year, despite the fact that sales in the quarter ended June 1 rose 9 percent. During that quarter, profit fell 3 percent.
The stores appear to be getting more shoppers as the economy struggles, but those shoppers are making purchases less often and buying fewer items.
Dollar General has a store in Portland at 220 W. Lincoln Ave.
Family Dollar has a store at 703 N Meridian St., Portland.
Hosting
Matchett and Ward Insurance, Winchester, will host a customer appreciation day reception on Friday. The reception will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include a free lunch and a drawing for gas cards.
Financial program offered
Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, a nine-week course that aims to provide families and individuals with practical tools for financial success, will be offering a class in Portland in August.
The course, which will meet once a week, will be taught by DVD and be followed by a small-group discussion.
Classes will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 323 S. Meridian St., Portland, starting August 27 at 6:30 p.m.
