First half stretch gives Jay win (11/13/03)
JCHS girls basketball
PORTLAND — A lot of the game wasn’t too good to look at. But, for about an eight minute stretch in the first half the Jay County girls basketball team created a work of art.
The Patriots used a 16-0 run in the first half to open an insurmountable lead for a 48-34 victory over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers in a game which included 55 combined turnovers.
“It’s a good start,” said junior Jamie Bruggeman. “It felt good. It felt like we were moving the ball well.
“We had a really good first half.”
Particularly during the eight minutes spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second.
Carrying an 8-4 lead, Jay County (1-0) clamped down on defense and went on the run which would put the Archers out of contention.
Bruggeman got the rally started, scooping up a loose ball under the basket and banking it off the glass and in. A couple of Renae Laux free throws followed before Bruggeman scored again with 21 seconds left in the half.
After a couple of missed South Side free throws, the Patriots turned the scoring over to Lisa Weitzel.
Using the final 10 seconds of the period to perfection, her teammates found Weitzel wide open in the left corner. She made the Archers pay for the mistake, nailing a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 17-4 lead after one quarter.
Weitzel struck again to start the second period, nailing a 3-pointer on an assist from Renae Laux. Leah Gasparovic scored back-to-back buckets to cap the 16-0 run to make the advantage 24-4 less than three minutes into the second quarter.
“I think with this group, and the way we can put pressure on people, that can happen,” said Jay County coach Lea Selvey of the run. “We have got great shooters. I think we play a pretty decent half-court defense and then you can throw in the pressure defense. Basically, it threw them off early.”
“I think one of the things was it was our first game,” said new South Side coach Gary Garrington. “It was their first time with me in a game. We came out kind of timid.”
South Side was held scoreless for 7:40 as Jay County pulled away. The Archers’ lone second quarter basket came on a put-back by Siera Moore midway through the period, but Bruggeman scored a final hoop for the 20-point halftime lead.
Bruggeman finished the contest with a team-high 10 points, six of which came in the opening quarter. Weitzel scored seven as the Patriots used a ridiculously balanced scoring attack.
Sarah Dirksen had seven points, Markie Runyon went 3-of-3 from the field for six points, and Renae Laux was 6-of-8 from the free throw line for six points.
The Patriots got good shooting all around, hitting 18-of-40 field goal attempts (45 percent) and 9-of-13 from the free throw line (69 percent).
“I think that’ll be a trademark,” said Selvey. “There are nights when a kid can bust out and score a lot of points. But, this is pretty much what I think you’ll see every night.”
Jay County also got a nice team effort on the glass as they pulled down 37 rebounds while South Side had 38.
Weitzel grabbed nine rebounds for the Patriots, Dirksen had eight and Laux finished with six. Shaila Jackson paced South Side with seven boards.
Jay County turned the ball over 29 times, but the Archers also had ball control problems and gave it away 26 times.
With the rebounding and turnover battles nearly even, South Side’s 25 percent shooting effort was not nearly enough to keep it in the game despite the fact that it took 13 more field goal attempts than the Patriots. It shot just 13-of-53 in the contest from the field, and made only six out of 21 free throws.
South Side trailed by 26 at the end of three quarters before finally getting some offense going in the final period.
Their ace, Jana Reese, started to put the ball in the basket, scoring 13 of her game-high 16 in the fourth quarter. Her effort sparked a 20-point period for the Archers, but it was too little far too late.
“One of our main goals to win a game is 10 turnovers or less,” said Garrington. “We can not afford 10 turnovers versus any team.”
Having won its first home game, Jay County will now try to pick up a victory on the road when it travels to Muncie Southside Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Junior varsity
The Patriots were even more dominant in the junior varsity game, building a 22-5 lead at halftime and never letting South Side get going in a 50-12 win.
Miranda Betz racked up a team-best 10 points for Jay County. Whitney Homan scored all of her seven points in the fourth quarter.
Theresa Reinhart, Amber Champ and Sara Garringer totaled six points apiece.
