Fisher bologna wins national award

Fisher Meats won a grand champion award for its bologna recently at a national trade show in Omaha, Neb.

Fisher's bologna clinched first place in the large diameter luncheon meats class. Judges scored entries on aroma, flavor, eye appeal, color and texture.

There were a total of 734 entries in 25 categories at the show. Fisher Meats operates at West Walnut Street in Portland and recently opened a location in Muncie.

New manager

Kathy Carpenter was recently named manager of the Portland Banking Center, First Bank of Berne.

Carpenter has been with First Bank of Berne since October 2007 as a mortgage originator and has more than 20 years experience in banking and finance.

She is a Jay County resident, where she lives with her husband and two sons, and is a member of the Morning Optimist Club and Jay County Chamber of Commerce, of which she is also a seminar committee member.

Recalled

Bluffton manufacturer Buckhorn recently recalled 50 employees to work after having laid off 58 in early April.

The Sprinfield, Mo., company made a shift in labor from its Missouri plants to the Bluffton facility.

The company may recall the remaining employees and shift back to a seven-day production schedule from its current five-day depending on order volume. The company employed about 180 before the layoffs in April.

An Adams County farmer was recently featured in Farm World newspaper.

Steve Redelman, a farmer, owners of Farm Solutions and representative for seed companies and fertilizer sellers, spoke with the newspaper about the challenges of being a disabled farmer. Redelman suffers from cerebral palsy and has disabilities including a speech impediment.

Networking breakfast

The next Jay County Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast will be Aug. 12.

The breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Dunkirk Elks Lodge. Hannah Hughes and Kalla Caffee of Bollenbacher and Associates will present the program "New Tax Laws and How They Affect Your Business."

Breakfast is $4.

Earnings reports

Verizon Communications Inc. reported a 21 percent drop in second-quarter profits resulting in job cuts. The company sliced 8,000 jobs as profits plummeted to 52 cents per share, down from 66 per share a year ago.

Bluffton-based Franklin Electric Co. Inc. announced a 62 percent drop in earnings from a year ago, with shares falling to 25 cents per share, down from 66 cents per share in 2008. Executives said they expect earnings to return as the company shifts jobs to its Mexico facilities.

Old National Bancorp also reported major dips in second-earnings as share prices fell 50 percent, to 15 cents from 30 a year prior. The company is facing a total allowance for bad loans of $70.1 million as of June 20.

Applying

The owners of Portland's forthcoming Buffalo Wings and Rings restaurant announced that applications will be taken starting Monday.

The restaurant and sports bar, located at 1204 W. Votaw St. in front of Holiday Inn Express, will begin accepting applications for assistant managers, cooks, servers, bartenders and hostesses at Work One, Portland, 107 S. Meridian St. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 14.
