Fisher Packing Co. of Portland was recently named champion of frankfurters at the American Cured Meat Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Judging was based on aroma, flavor, eye appeal, color and texture.

The meat shop is located at 300 W. Walnut St.

EXPANSION COMPLETE

Ponderosa Steakhouse in Portland recently completed an expansion of its restaurant.

The addition to the front of the North Meridian Street building added seating for about 80 people. The rest of the building also was remodeled.

Plans call for using the new room for banquets, meetings, wedding rehearsal dinners, sports teams and other events.

QUOTED

Dr. Kathleen Galbraith of Family Practice of Jay County was recently quoted in an American Medical Association publication.

Galbraith was interviewed by “American Medical News” about the growing number of malpractice suits against obstetricians.

The article appeared in the Aug. 23/30 edition. Galbraith is an officer of the Indiana State Medical Association’s Board of Trustees and chief of staff at Jay County Hospital.

MOVING

DCS Computer Sales and Services Inc., 214 S. Main St., Dunkirk, plans to move to a larger location by the end of the year.

The firm, which is owned by Jim Doughty, will be moving to the former location of Miller’s Market grocery store. This site is at the southwest corner of Main and Center streets in Dunkirk.

The move will not be completed for at least a month and a half.

STORE CLOSES

The Tobacco Road convenience store and gas station in Dunkirk closed for good last week.

The business, which was located on South Main Street, closed on Aug. 19.

Many of the company’s other stores in Yorktown, Parker City and Middletown also have closed.

The owner of the franchise, Kiel Brothers Oil Co. of Columbus, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a month ago.

TAILGATE PARTY

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a tailgate party on Friday, Oct. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m., before and after the Jay County High School Homecoming parade.

The cookout will be held on Main Street, in front of First National Bank. Hamburgers, brats and drinks will be served. Music and limited seating will be provided.

WORKSHOP SET

The Portland Area Chamber of Commerce will host a customer service excellence workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 8:30 a.m. at the Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St.

The three-and-a-half hour workshop will cover service mistakes, service details, critical elements to achieve excellence and how to handle problems and complaints.

The cost is $59 for chamber members and $69 for non-chamber members. There will be a discount if three or more members of the same organization attend.

CRISIS SEMINAR

Coles Public Relations of Indianapolis will be conducting a crisis communications seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Indiana Wesleyan University, 3777 Priority Way, Indianapolis.

How to tell a crisis from an emergency, components of a crisis plan, controlling communications during a crisis and 10 rules for working with the media under crisis will all be discussed.

NURSING CLASSES

The RN-BSN nursing program at Wright State University and Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health has recently become more affordable for Jay County residents.

The schools recently decided to allow students in Jay, Randolph, Adams and other surrounding counties to pay the Ohio in-state tuition rates to attend Wright State. That results in a savings of $8,740.

Classes can be taken in a traditional classroom format through interactive learning technology or by an online web-based instructional program.

Anyone who would like to take classes should contact Ben Shockley, coordinator and academic advisor for the program, at (937) 775-3132. Classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 7.

AERIAL PATROLS

American Electric Power has begun conducting helicopter patrols of its high-voltage transmission lines in Indiana.

The patrols began on Monday and will continue until Friday, Sept. 3. They will be done in northwest Ohio areas, the South Bend area, Benton Harbor, Mich. area, Fort Wayne area and the Muncie and Marion areas. Lines along the eastern side of the state also will be covered.

The helicopters will be flying 50 to 100 feet above the transmission lines from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Anyone with questions or concerns can contact AEP at (800) 311-4634 or (800) 277-2177 for Ohio residents.

The East Central Indiana Human Resource Association will meet Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the Delaware Country Club, South Country Club Road.

Registration is at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon. Kim Vosburg, director of human resources for the Gene R. Glick Company, will speak at 12:20 p.m. about “Starting Ahead of the Curve.”
