Ford powers Starfires in blowout

BERNE — Alexis Ford went 5-for-5 to lead the South Adams High School softball team to a 23-1, five-inning victory Thursday over the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
Ford racked up four singles, a double, four RBIs and four runs for the Starfires (2-1), who broke the game open with 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning. They also scored nine times in the fourth inning.
Maizy Switzer added three hits and four RBIs, Maddie Morgan drove in three runs, and Ashleigh Freeman and Lauren Smith scored three times apiece.
Loren Sparks earned the win, giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out eight batters.
SAHS also lost 2-1 Wednesday at home to the Blackford Bruins. Alyssa Bluhm, who took the loss, had a hit and a run, and Rachel Hirschy finished with a single and an RBI.

Bellmont defeats JC
DECATUR — Jay County’s girls tennis team won just one set Thursday as it fell 5-0 to the host Bellmont Squaws.

Brooke Fraley won her opening set at No. 2 singles, but couldn’t keep up the pace in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 loss to Kylie Beery. In other singles matches, Avery Loyd fell 6-1, 6-2 to Alysha Helmrich at No. 1, and Morgan Kaufman lost 6-1, 6-0 to Andrea Chronister at No. 2.
Sydney Bost and Shawna Miller of the Patriots (0-2) dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, 6-3 to Andrea Fruchte and Shelby Kiess. Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles to Rachel Baumgartner and Audrey Schultz.
JCHS won the junior varsity match 4-2 with Jessica Kerrigan and Kyra Braun each turning in tiebreaker victories.

Patriot JV loses
MIDDLETOWN — The Jay County junior varsity baseball team scored twice in the sixth inning to force extra innings, but gave up the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth in a 5-4 loss to the host Shenandoah Raiders.
Chaz Carroll took the loss for the Patriots despite not giving up a hit. He allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Austin Beasley led the JCHS offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Brandon Muhlenkamp and Andrew McShane each had one hit, one run and one RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
