Former JC coach gets award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former Jay County High School girls basketball coach recently received a Crossroads League award.
Luke Cummings, who coached the Patriots in the 2009-10 season and is currently the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Saint Francis, was named the 2014 Crossroads League Coach of Character award.
“The university is extremely proud of Luke Cummings for being recognized as the Crossroads League ‘Coach in Character’ Award recipient,” USF Athletic Director Mike McCaffrey said in a press release. “Luke has brought many different skills and qualities to our department since he arrived and has held many positions in a very short amount of time.”
Cummings, who also serves as the USF director of athletics/marketing, joined the Cougars’ staff in 2010 after leaving Jay County, where he led the Patriots to a 16-7 record.

Tribe blank Rangers
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery baseball team scored the only run it needed in the first inning.
Jackson Hobbs and Chase Bruns pitched lights out the rest of the way.
The Indians scored six insurance runs in the second and added one more in the fifth to shut out visiting New Knoxville, 8-0.
Hobbs had two of this three hits in the second inning, including a single to drive in a pair of runs. Cole Wendel had an RBI single, and Mitch Stammen knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Derek Backs also scored in the frame after the New Knoxville catcher threw the ball into left field as Backs attempted to steal third.
Elijah Kahlig had two hits and two RBIs ad Kyle Schroer also had a hit and an RBI.
Hobbs and Bruns combined to toss a four-hitter for the Indians, who improved to 14-3 on the season and are back above .500 (3-2) in Midwest Athletic Conference play.
Stars walk off
BERNE — The South Adams baseball team only had the lead against Southern Wells when it mattered most.
Skylar Schoch hit a three-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Conner Sealscott hit into a walk-off fielder’s choice as the Starfires rallied past the visiting Raiders 5-4.
Southern Wells broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth inning and added one more in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-1 lead over the Starfires.
Schoch came through with his only hit of the contest to tie the game at four and give the Starfires new life.
Then, Sealscott hit his second double of the game in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Kenny Amstutz and complete the comeback.

Chandler Ingle and Sealscott both had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Starfires, who also got a hit from Brandon Dailey and Derek Wanner.
Eric Pimentel got the win in relief of SAHS starter Jared Nussbaum.

SA sweeps Raiders
BERNE — The South Adams softball team exploded for 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.
The Starfires took the first game 12-2 in five innings, and then dismantled the Raiders 16-4 in game two.
In game one, South Adams had a narrow 4-2 lead heading into the home half of the fifth inning, but then put up eight runs to end the game early.
They continued to pour on the runs in the second game, scoring two or more in each of the first four innings. The Starfires scored two in the first, three in the second, eight in the third and three in the fourth.
Alyssa Bluhm led South Adams with five hits — three triples and two doubles — and drove in six runs. Lauren Smith had five hits and five RBIs, and Katelin Augsburger also had five RBIs.
Brandy Rogers, Maddie Morgan, Alaina Johnston and Augsburger all had three hits on the day.

Jay JV falls
Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team lost a pair of home games this week.
The Patriots were outmatched by Delta in a 30-9 loss Wednesday to the visiting Eagles in six innings. Delta had an 11-9 lead after three, but scored eight runs in the fifth and 11 in the sixth.
Jay County also lost Tuesday to the visiting Yorktown Tigers, 12-2 in five innings.
Yorktown found holes in the Patriot defense, jumping out to an 10-0 lead after three innings.

Eagles qualify
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The West Jay Middle School archery team scored 3,051 points Thursday at the National Archery in the Schools Program National Tournament to qualify for the World Tournament.
Conner Benter led the West Jay shooters with a 276 out of a possible 300 points. Joey Littler was close behind with a 273 and Hunter Harrison scored 263. Makayla Templeton had a 258 and Mackenzie Adkins rounded out the team score with a 256.
The NASP World Tournament will be held July 11 through 13 in Madison, Wisc.[[In-content Ad]]
