Former pet food plant changes hands

A local packaging company has purchased a former pet food plant.
Pioneer Packaging has purchased the former location of Mars Petcare, 301 E. Lincoln St., Portland.
The deed, dated Nov. 22, is for a total of 24.172 acres. The company plans to use the building for its warehousing operations, a county official said.
Mars Petcare closed in June of 2009, due to decreased demand.

Ethanol partnership
Ethanol producers are teaming up with NASCAR to bring biofuels to the sport as well as increase awareness of renewable fuels around the county.
NASCAR has joined with American Ethanol, a newly-formed organization created by Growth Energy with support of the National Corn Growers Association and other farming and ethanol leaders, including POET Biorefining.
The announcement was made weeks after NASCAR announced it would incorporate E15 fuels (15 percent ethanol) into its races.
The new venture will include: a starting flag featuring American Ethanol and NASCAR green; the driver with the fastest average speed on restarts will be awarded the American Ethanol Green Flag Restart Award; American Ethanol branding on the fuel port of every vehicle; and sponsorship of the NASCAR Green Summit.

4G delay
Verizon Wireless announced locations for new 4G broadband networks but northeast Indiana isn’t one of them.
The company unveiled new network coverage areas including Boston to Washington D.C., Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Seattle and areas in California.
A company spokesperson said there was no date set for the technology to come to the region but that it is being considered for the future.

New bakery
The Cobblestone Bakery recently opened its doors in Berne.
Owner Brenda Huey, the granddaughter of Geneva woman, opened the shop at 105 E. Water St., Berne, and will offer breads, pies and other baked goods, including seasonal offerings.

To speak
POET CEO Jeff Broin will speak at the ACORE Phase II Renewable Energy in the America National Policy Forum Dec. 8 and 9 in Washington D.C.
Broin will join Ethan Zindler, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, and Jon Wellinghoff, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, in a session titled “The State of Renewable Energy in America.”

Silicon Valley-bound
Portland native Mary Meeker, hailed as “Queen of the Net,” is leaving her position as head of global technology research at Morgan Stanley to take a job with a Silicon Valley venture-capital firm.
Meeker will joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers as a partner.
The company has provided capital to several highly successful tech companies including Netscape, Amazon, Google and, more recently, game producer Zynga, which created the Facebook sensation Farmville. She is a  graduate of DePauw University.

Red Gold was recently featured in a spread in My Indiana Home magazine’s winter edition.
The three-page spread included information about the company’s family roots and the company’s effect on Indiana economy through tomato-growing and processing.

Majority stake
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is purchasing a controlling stake in South Africa’s Massmart in a $2 billion deal.
The deal should give Wal-Mart inroads into the country as the world’s largest retailer continues to look to expand internationally.
Massmart operates 290 stores in 14 countries, with most of those locations in South Africa.
International stores account for about 25 percent of Wal-Mart’s more than $100 billion annual revenue.

Biofuels director
Former POET Biorefining – Portland general manager Greg Noble recently joined the Indiana Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Alliance as biofuels director.
Prior to his work at POET, Noble was vice president of Archer Daniels Midland Grain Company for 10 years as well as years with Countrymark Cooperative.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from The Ohio State University.[[In-content Ad]]
