Former Portland Rocket powers Roosters to victory (06/04/03)
Local Roundup
Given his first real chance, Tommy Pearce exploded onto the Frontier League scene recently.
Pearce, who spent the past two summers breaking team records while playing for the Portland Rockets, carried the Richmond Roosters to a 9-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Kings Sunday.
In the first eight games of the year, Pearce had played sparingly with just a single hit. However, he went wild when he got into the contest against Kalamazoo, putting the rosters on the board with a two-out RBI single in the first inning.
He followed with a bigger hit when he stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Despite slipping behind in the count 0-2, he crushed a grand slam over the wall in right field to complete a five-RBI game.
Pearce, a Marion native, has seen action in six games for far this year as Richmond has opened at 6-4. He is hitting .267 with one run and five RBIs.
He has a .467 slugging percentage and a .313 on base percentage.
