Fort announces student honors (5/16/03)
FORT RECOVERY — There’s no shortage of high academic achievement in the class of 2003 here.
Six Fort Recovery High School seniors have been named valedictorians, and two more are salutatorians, FRHS principal Ed Snyder announced this week.
Seniors Candice Gehret, Mindy Kahlig, Sarah Link, Jodie McClain, Monica Ranly and Greg Snyder are the class valedictorians. Fellow seniors Catherine Armstrong and Jason G. Wenning are this year’s salutatorians.
“This is the largest graduating class we have had for a long time,” Snyder said of the group of 92 students. But he added, the class also has “a large number of high achievers ... It’s been a solid academic class.”
In order to obtain valedictorian status, a senior must achieve a 4.0 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale. A GPA higher than 4.0 is possible because of the weighted credit students receive for Advance Placement classes. Students who successfully complete the AP college curriculum classes receive credit accepted by most colleges and universities, Snyder said.
AP classes offered each year at FRHS are literature and composition, calculus and chemistry.
The class salutatorian is the student who has “the next highest GPA below 4.0,” Snyder said. “And this year we had a tie.”
All eight of the FRHS honorees are scheduled to speak at commencement, which will be held Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. (Ohio time) at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
Gehret, the daughter of Patrick and Virginia Gehret, will attend Ohio Northern University to study in the pharmaceutical field. Kahlig is the daughter of Don and Linda Kahlig, and she will attend Miami or Wright State University and major in mathematics education.
Link, the daughter of Paul and Sharon Link, will major in music education at Capital University Conservatory of Music. McClain is the daughter of Robert and Cheryl McClain, and she will attend Ball State University to study psychology or journalism.
Ranly is the daughter of John and Carol Ranly, and she plans to major in clinical laboratory science at Miami University or the University of Dayton. Snyder, the son of Edward and Laura Snyder, will major in education/technology at Ohio Northern University.
Armstrong will major in early childhood education at Johnson Bible College. She is the daughter of Curt and Sandi Armstrong. Wenning is the son of Roger and Cheryl Wenning, and he will major in music education at Florida State University.[[In-content Ad]]
