Fort bounces back with win over Bearcats (04/09/08)

FORT RECOVERY - The first inning bit the Indians again. But they were solid the rest of the way.

The Fort Recovery High School baseball team erased memories of Monday's 10-run defeat, coming back Tuesday for a 3-2 win over the Spencerville Bearcats.

Spencerville scored twice off of Clint Tobe in the first inning, but he shut them down in the next two. Curt Heitkamp and Greg Kahlig added four innings of shutout relief, and the Indians (3-2) scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings for the victory.

Heitkamp picked up the win, striking out five batters in three innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk. Kahlig struck out two batters in the seventh inning for the save.

Frank Thien paced the Tribe offense with an RBI single. Heitkamp and Kahlig added one hit apiece.

Giants top JC tennis

MARION - A doubles duo came through again, but Jay County's girls tennis team fell Tuesday by a 4-1 score to the Marion Giants.

A night after the No. 1 doubles pair picked up the only victory in a loss to Richmond, the No. 2 combination of Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman scored the lone Patriot point. They dropped a tight first-set tiebreaker, but rallied for a 6-7, (6-8), 6-4, 6-4 win over Morgan Schoer and Brooke Applewhite.

JCHS lost all the other matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-3 loss by Tiffani Bickel and Hannah McAbee to Alex Carter and Alex Davis at No. 1 doubles. In singles matches Megan Adams fell 6-4, 6-2 to Tamara Barrett at No. 1, Betsy Knittle lost 6-2, 6-2 to Emma Friday at No. 2 and Kayla Martin went down 6-1, 6-0 to Veronica Sandoval at No. 3.

In junior varsity action the team of Brittany White and Jenna Wilson turned in an 8-0 victory over Maria Sandoval and Marina Sharif as the Patriots topped Marion 6-5.

FR softball falls

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery softball team slipped to 2-2 Tuesday with a 9-2 loss to the Houston Wildcats.

Beth May started and gave up seven runs - five earned - on seven hits and two walks in five innings to take the defeat. Kinsey Wenning saw her first action of the year, allowing two runs - one earned - on two walks.

Heather Schmackers had two hits and drove in one of the Tribe runs. Kelly Sudhoff also had two hits, and Joanna Snyder added an RBI single.

SA boys track 2nd

BERNE - Trent Moore picked up a pair of victories Tuesday as the South Adams boys track team finished second as host of three-team action. The Starfires scored 60 points, finishing behind Garrett (80) and ahead of Adams Central (16).

The SAHS girls team was third in a tight battle. Garrett won with 57 points, followed by Adams Central (55) and the Starfires (43).

Moore powered the boys team in the sprints. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds, and took the top spot in the 200 in 24.2.

Cody Meshberger won the 300 hurdles in 44.8, and South Adams was also first in the 4x100 relay at 45.8.

The Starfire girls performed well in the distance events with Maddie Moore taking the 1,600 run in 5-minutes, 49 seconds and Allison Beitler winning the 3,200 run in 13:05. SAHS also took the 4x800 relay in 10:53.

Megan Myers turned in the other victory in the shot put at 31 feet, 2 ½ inches.[[In-content Ad]]
