Fort chamber banquet set

The Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual banquet and awards ceremony March 13.
The chamber is also accepting nominations for the Citizen of the Year and Hall of Fame awards through Feb. 14. Nomination forms are available at Fort Recovery Library, the post office, Mercer Savings Bank, Second National Bank and First Financial Bank.
The banquet will take place at the Fort Recovery Middle School auditeria starting at 6 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from any chamber member or by calling (419) 375-2530.
Distribution center
Family Dollar announced it will open a $70 million distribution center in Ashley.
The town, about 30 miles north of Fort Wayne in Steuben County, should see about 350 new jobs created next year when the center opens. The deal has been in discussion since 2006.
Construction is expected to begin in April with the center opening in spring 2012. The town has about 1,000 residents and beat out Van Wert and Defiance, both in Ohio, as the selected location.
Family Dollar will be receiving $2.1 million in state tax credits, $200,000 in training grants, $390,000 from DeKalb County, $200,000 from Steuben County and $900,000 in infrastructure and other improvements from the town as incentive for the location.
Immigration program
Tyson Foods recently became the first major food producer to join the U.S. Immigration Agency’s IMAGE Program.
The program allows businesses to partner with the government to ensure that its employees are legally authorized to work in the United States.
Tyson employs about 100,000 people in the United States.

The Berne Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual awards banquet.
Moser Motor Sales was honored as Business of the Year and Dave Baumgartner received the Citizen of the Year award.

The Randolph County Airport runway extension project was recently featured in Airport Improvement magazine.
The $4.4 million project was completed in late 2010 and the magazine highlighted the county’s innovative handling of the project, which received 95 percent of the funding from the federal government.

Verizon Communications filed an appeal to new federal regulations demanding net neutrality.
The Federal Communications Commission adopted new rules last month stating that phone or cable companies cannot restrict access to Internet content and services. The rule was made to prevent telecommunications companies from blocking access to potential competitors.
Arby’s sale?
Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc. is considering selling its underperforming Arby’s franchise.
The Atlanta company is considering the sale as the Arby’s franchise is struggling in the fast food market. The company will focus its efforts toward the better-performing Wendy’s franchise.
Healthier food
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced that it will seek to produce healthier food and ask suppliers to do the same.
The company is on board with first lady Michelle Obama’s push to reduce childhood obesity by encouraging healthier eating.
Wal-Mart plans to reduce sodium and sugars in some items, increase produce, build stores in low-income areas where grocery stores aren’t available and create branding for healthy options.
Comcast cleared
Federal regulators green-lighted a deal that will allow Comcast Corp. to obtain a majority stake in NBC Universal.
The company will purchase a 51 percent stake in NBC from General Electric Co. for $13.8 billion.
Regulators require that Comcast allow NBC programming to be available to other TV providers as well as to Internet video services.
Comcast has 23 million TV subscribers.
Walmart upgrades
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced it will spend about $5 million to renovate two locations in northeast Indiana.
The company will update its Apple Glen Crossing location in Fort Wayne and a Kendallville location in Noble County.
The need for renovations in both locations is being driven by strong sales in electronics.

Two counselors for the Youth Service Bureau were recently certified as 40 Developmental Assets Trainers.
Jenni Vanskyock and April Knasinski completed the certification requirements from the Search Institute with sponsorship from the Indiana Youth Institute. The certification will allow both counselors to provide public education on youth issues that help reduce negative behaviors.[[In-content Ad]]
