Fort FFA members earn honors
Taking Note
Five Fort Recovery FFA members recently earned the State FFA Degree, which is the highest degree a member can receive from the state association.
Dale Brunswick, Jake Knapke, Jackie Lennartz, Shelly Schoenlein and David Willmann earned this award by working more than 1,000 hours and have gross earnings of $4,000 or more.
They also had to be actively involved in chapter, school and community activities.
The winners were awarded an Ohio plaque at the annual Fort Recovery FFA banquet and a gold key at the 76th State FFA Convention held in Columbus, Ohio.
Attending the State Convention on April 29 through May 1 were 42 members of the Fort Recovery FFA Chapter.
Matt Fortkamp, a graduate FFA member and son of Paul and Ginny Fortkamp, placed first in the state in the Poultry Placement Proficiency.
Deanna Lennartz, graduate FFA member and daughter of Tom and Cathy Lennartz, placed first in the state in the Nursery Operations Proficiency.
Eric Weitzel, senior FFA member and son of Norb and Betty Weitzel, placed first in the state in the Diversified Livestock Production Proficiency.
The Chapter also won two banners for top five performance in skills contest this year, including fifth place in agronomy judging and third place in poultry judging.
They also won ten plaques for performance in skills, including eighth place in wildlife management, eighth place in Greenhand Quiz Contest, ninth place in engineering technology, and seventh place in grain merchandising.
Members Kyle Brockman, Emily Crouch, David Fortkamp, Melanie Lennartz, Jackie Link, Matt Lochtefeld, Kyle Nietfeld, Bruce Schoen and Scott Will were selected and participated in FFA Courtesy Corp.
The Fort Recovery FFA Greenhand Team competed in the State Greenhand Quiz Contest and won and eighth place plaque. Team members include Tana Bergman, Kyle Brockman, Emily Crouch, David Fortkamp, Jesse Fortkamp, Nick Grey, Jennie Guggenbiller, Melanie Lennartz, Jackie Link, Andy Lochtefeld, Matt Lochtefeld, Kyle Nietfeld, Betsy Overman, Bruce Schoen, Adam Tobe, Ryan Will and Scott Will.
HONOR ROLL
Katlyn Gray, Portland, has been recognized for academic achievement as a United States National Honor Roll Award winner. She attends Heritage Hall Christian School in Muncie and will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook.
She is the daughter of Les and Melinda Gray, Portland. Her grandparents are Frank and Mary Gray, Portland, and James and Lillian Gray, Louisa, Ky.
EARNED DEGREE
Andrea Kay Overla, Angola, recently received her Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from IU Purdue University in Fort Wayne. She is the daughter of Thersa Overla, Angola (a former Portland resident) and the granddaughter of Victor and Thelma Overla, Portland.
DEAN’S LIST
Indiana State University in Terre Haute announced their Spring 2004 Dean’s List. Among those honored was Matthew Longfellow of Union City.
MINNETRISTA
Come to Minnetrista Cultural Center on Saturday, May 22, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and make a garden trough.
Stone troughs can be used to house charming miniature garden landscapes. Supplies and instructions will be supplied to make your own 18” by 20” trough.

Also Saturday, May 22,there will also be a Minnetrista Heritage Collection tour on 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Artifacts that document the history of East Central Indiana will be on display.

The Iris Growers of Eastern Indiana will be holding their annual Iris Show on Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Minnetrista Cultural Center, 1200 N. Minnetrista Parkway, Muncie.
The public is invited to exhibit iris’s they have grown. Entries are to be made on Saturday, May 29, between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Judging will be from 10 a.m. to noon. Entries aren’t to be removed before Sunday at 4 p.m.
