Fort freshmen split with Flyers (01/13/04)

Local Roundup

Defense was the key in Fort Recovery’s win, and its loss.

The Indians’ freshman girls basketball team trampled the Marion Local Flyers 30-11 Monday. The boys team had less success, dropping a 54-26 decision.

The girls team shut out Marion Local in the first period, and led 18-5 at halftime. It limited the Flyers to a pair of third-quarter points as it cruised to the win.

Abby Niekamp paced the Indians with eight points, and Lauren Wenning added six points and four rebounds. Sandra Sudhoff and Shelby Knapke also scored six points apiece.

The Fort Recovery boys team gave up double-digit points in each of the first three quarters, and scored just two points of its own in the third in the loss. Tony Diller paced the Tribe with 10 points, and Kraig Wendel and Kenton Sudhoff each added four.

Eagles lose first

The undefeated season disappeared for the West Jay eighth grade girls basketball team Monday as it suffered a 26-25 loss to Randolph Southern. The seventh grade team also lost, 31-16.

The eighth grade Eagles led by three points at the end of the first quarter and at halftime. However, they fell behind by two, scoring just four points in the third period.

West Jay bounced back with 12 fourth-quarter points, but it was not quite enough to stay unbeaten.

Brittany O’Dell scored 10 points as the Eagles dropped to 6-1. Trish Champ finished with eight points.

The seventh grade team went scoreless in the first quarter and never led. Kelci Reed scored six points, and Jessica Piercey and Baylea Holdcroft each had four points.

East Elementary used balanced scoring to score a couple of wins over Bloomfield Monday. East won the A team game 28-21, and took the B team game 25-17.

Seven different players scored for East in the A team game as both teams entered the contest unbeaten.
