Fort girls beaten by Green Wave (11/29/03)

Local Roundup

GREENVILLE, Ohio — A rough first quarter was too much to overcome in the season opener for Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team.

The Indians, opening up the year at always-tough Greenville, found themselves in a 17-6 hole after the opening period.

It was a hole they almost, but not quite, dug themselves out of, as the host Green Wave (1-0) held on for a 56-51 win.

Down 11 points after one period, Fort Recovery outplayed its hosts in the second to trim the margin to 27-21. Greenville’s lead was just four, 38-34, heading into the fourth.

Fort Recovery’s Joscie Kaup and Greenville’s Rachel Fiely each put together big games in similar fashion. The pair, who each had 21 points to lead their teams, each made five field goals and struggled from the floor. But each made up for it at the free throw line, with Fort’s Kaup connecting on 11-of-12 attempts and Fiely hitting 10-of-14 from the line.

The host Green Wave also got 10 points from Amy Starks and seven from Megan Miller.

Fort Recovery’s Krystal Rammel and Jenn Stahl each scored six points, while Holly Stein and Megan Wenning had five points each.

Cold shooting — especially in the first half — hurt the Indians, who hit just 7-of-24 shots in the first half (29 percent) and 18-of-52 (34 percent) overall. The Indians missed all five 3-point attempts.

Greenville shot a solid 15-for-33 (48.4 percent) from the floor, including 2-of-3 from behind the 3-point line.

Stahl and Wenning each had six rebounds for the Indians, who won the battle of the boards by a 29-21 margin.

In Friday’s junior varsity game, Fort Recovery rallied in the fourth quarter for a 35-33 victory.

Tiffany Gaerke paced a balanced FRHS attack with eight points, while Kelly Link added six points and Renee Evers scored five.

Bluffton beats Starfires

BERNE — A close game for two quarters didn’t stay that way for long in the third.

Bluffton, unable to shake host South Adams over the first 16 minutes, outscored the Starfires 23-7 in the third quarter on the way to a 67-41 win in girls basketball Friday at the Stardome.

The Tigers had a balanced scoring attack paced by Mandy Huber’s 15 points. Leah Robles added 14, while Chrissy Tudor scored 12 for Bluffton.

South Adams got double-figure production from Kelly Mertz, with 14 points, and Brittany Moser, with 10.

Mertz also had a team-best seven rebounds and Moser six.

The Starfires’ Kindle Inniger and Jessie Liechty each had three assists in Friday night’s game.

Bluffton won Friday’s junior varsity game by a 33-26 margin.[[In-content Ad]]
