Fort grades to go online (3/10/04)
New system will allow parents to check progress on Internet
FORT RECOVERY — It’s a change that’s likely to please many parents with kids in Fort Recovery Local Schools. Their kids? Well, that might be another story.
A new system that will allow parents access to weekly updates on students’ grades and progress via the Internet will be implemented on a trial basis during the fourth nine-week grading period. The trial period will include grades one through eighth, but, if successful, the system will likely be expanded next school year to grades one through 12.
Members of the Fort Recovery School Board received a demonstration and update on the project Tuesday from technology coordinator Chris Keller.
Dennis Ontrop, treasurer for Fort Recovery schools, said this morning that teachers in the school system are already entering individual grades for tests and other assignments into the school’s computer system, which then figures final grades and prints grade cards.
“Some of the older kids might not like it so well, but mom and dad can check on them,” Ontrop said. (Board members) think it could be a good communication tool for parents.”
The Edline software will allow parents, using a password, to check on progress throughout the nine weeks. Teachers will be asked to update grades on a weekly basis.
Teachers are beginning training on the Edline system this week, and training sessions for parents who have expressed an interest in the program will begin next week.
Among several policy changes approved by board members Tuesday was one mandated by state law regarding a situation where a juvenile sex offender is enrolled in the school system.
The change requires the school superintendent to notify parents with students in the school system if a juvenile who is a registered sex offender is attending school. The same notification applies if an adult sex offender is working in the school system.
Parents will be directed to the county sheriff for more information.
Also Tuesday, board members
•Appropriated an additional $23,446 to the classroom facilities maintenance fund. The money will be used to upgrade the heating and cooling system for the Fort Recovery Middle/Elementary School.
•Approved Fort Recovery High School graduate Amy Reinhard as an assistant middle school track coach. Reinhard, a senior at the University of Findlay, is currently completing her student teacher and living in Fort Recovery.
There are still vacancies for the head coach of the junior high track program and at least one assistant for the high school track team.[[In-content Ad]]
