Steve Wendel of Fort Recovery has been appointed to head the National Center for Manufacturing Education in Science, Mathematics and Engineering at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.

Wendel's experience includes work as co-principal investigator for the Midwest Coalition for Comprehensive Design Education. He has taught at Sinclair since 1994. Currently he instructs mechanical engineering technology.

Wendel is a graduate of the University of Dayton, with bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering.

New jobs added

New information from the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration shows that small businesses added 39,100 new jobs in Indiana in 2004 - the most recent year information is available.

The Office of Advocacy is a small business watchdog of the federal government. It examines the role of small business in the economy and represents views of small business to federal agencies, lawmakers and the president.

Hospital upgrade

The Mercer Health Board of Governors unanimously approved the purchase of a new video system for Mercer Health's surgery department at its monthly meeting on Oct. 24.

Susan Miller, nurse manager of the surgery department, said at the meeting that the new equipment will replace outdated units that are difficult to repair.

The new system, manufactured by Karl Storz Endoscopy, will be used for general surgery procedures, including orthopedic surgeries for knees, shoulders and wrists. It includes a high-definition camera box, camera, flat panel monitor, printer and cart.

Roadshow set

A team of state agencies will host two regional workshops for small businesses on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The events will be held Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ivy Tech -Auditorium, room 1200, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd., Fort Wayne, and Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Indiana University Northwest, Savannah Center Auditorium, 3400 Broadway, Gary.

The three-hour workshops will provide small business owners information about how to access state-sponsored programs. The event is hosted in partnership with the National Federation of Independent Businesses. Representatives from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the Department of Workforce Development, the Department of Environmental Management and the Department of Labor are among those expected to attend the event.

Emergency department growth

Mercer Health Board officials have seen a new version of the proposed emergency department and outpatient center project. The plan features the new emergency department doubling in size, with separate entrances available for ambulance patients and walk-in patients. An additional entrance also is being proposed for the Outpatient Care Center.

CEO Jim Wermert said he hopes the final plans for the expansion will be in place by December or January, with construction set for spring 2008 if the health board of governors approves the move.

Announces dividend

The board of directors for Old National Bancorp, based in Evansville, has announced a quarterly cash dividend of 22 cents per share. It is payable Dec. 17 to shareholders of record Dec. 3.

JRDS awards

Jay-Randolph Developmental Services celebrated its annual awards presentation at Deerfield Elementary School on Sept. 11. It marked the 49th anniversary of the organization helping people with special needs.

Environmental concerns

Members of Citizens Acting Responsibly for the Environment have raised concerns to Mercer County Commissioners about the upcoming construction of an ethanol plant east of Celina, Ohio.

The biggest worry members of the organization reportedly have, according to the Celina Daily Standard, is the plant's discharge into nearby Grand Lake. Representatives of the organization want the project halted until more information can be gathered about its environmental impact.

Commissioners told the group the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has approved the facility and they play no role in permitting or denying its existence.

Landlords worried

Landlords of some Movie Gallery Inc. stores that are planned to be closed are worried going-out-of-business signs could hurt business at shopping centers throughout the country.

The company has filed for bankruptcy and plans to shut down 520 stores in an effort to save about $70 million. It has been given permission in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to begin closing stores and to sell leases at an auction scheduled for Nov. 15.[[In-content Ad]]
