Fort Recovery 11th in Division IV voting (01/10/07)

Basketball roundup

Two losses over the weekend didn't stop the voters from recognizing Fort Recovery's outstanding start.

The Indian boys basketball team lost 71-58 to Minster Friday and 77-61 to Houston Saturday. But the Tribe was still rewarded in the first Associated Press poll, finishing just outside the top 10 in Division IV.

Fort Recovery (6-3), which won six of its first seven games, was 11th in the Division IV voting in the poll released Tuesday. It picked up 33 poll points, 14 behind 10th-ranked Ottoville (7-1) and three ahead of Ansonia.

Russia (8-0) is ranked No. 1 with 168 points, and Berlin Hiland (6-1) was second at 133.

The Indians are responsible for the only blemish on the record of Division III No. 8 Versailles (9-1), having defeated the Tigers 58-55 Dec. 8. They face another big test Friday when they host Midwest Athletic Conference rival and Division IV No. 3 New Knoxville (8-0).

Starfires squads fall

BLUFFTON - South Adams had no luck in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday as both the boys and girls teams lost to Bluffton.

The Starfire boys rallied in the fourth quarter, but still lost 51-48 to the Tigers while the girls team went scoreless in the third quarter of a 61-25 defeat.

Bluffton (7-3) opened a 30-15 halftime lead over South Adams (4-6) in the boys game, and was still up by 12 with eight minutes to play. The Starfires rallied with 24 fourth-quarter points, as many as they had in the previous three quarters combined, but still fell short by three points.

Andrew Caffee paced SAHS with 14 points, and Darin Toland scored 11. Jordan Sharp added seven points.

The South Adams (2-11) girls fell behind 23-8 to the Tigers (9-5) after the opening period and were outscored 17-0 in the third. Jodie Muhlenkamp had seven points and five rebounds to lead the Starfires, and Jordan Lehman also scored seven points.

Scots defeat JC freshmen

ANDERSON - Jay County's freshman boys basketball team couldn't keep up with the Anderson Highland Scots after the intermission, stumbling in the third quarter of a 37-29 loss.

The Patriots trailed by just two points at the half, but Highland took a 12-4 advantage in the third quarter to pull away. Josh Troxtle led the Scots with a game-high 17 points.

Eric Homan scored nine points to pace Jay County, and John Pettus finished with six.

JCHS won the B team game 11-8 with Nathaniel Brown scoring five points and Patrick Williams adding four.

Tribe struggles continue

UNION CITY - Fort Recovery Middle School's boys basketball teams fell again Tuesday, losing the eighth grade game 40-35 and the seventh grade game 27-6 against Union City.

The Tribe's eighth graders led 8-6 after the opening quarter and were close throughout, but still slipped to 0-6. Shane Brunswick finished with 13 points, and John Homan scored 10.

The seventh grade team was up 5-4 after the opening period, but scored just one more point as it went scoreless in the second and fourth. Jared Kahlig finished with four points, and Jacob Leuthold had two.[[In-content Ad]]
