Fort Recovery blanks Panthers (05/05/04)

Fort Recovery Roundup

The Fort Recovery softball team kept itself in contention for the Midwest Athletic Conference title Tuesday. The Indians also moved a step closer to yet another school record for wins as they edged the visiting Division III No. 10 Parkway Panthers 1-0.

Julie Smith tossed another gem for the Tribe, improving to 9-1. The Tribe improved to 14-5 overall — one short of the school record for wins — and 3-1 in the MAC.

Smith stifled the Panther hitters, striking out 12 batters in seven innings. She walked two and allowed just two hits.

Joscie Kaup had two hits, and Krystal Rammel added a double. Alyssa Tobe drove in the lone run of the game with a single in the fourth inning.

The Indians will look to continue their MAC success and tie the school record for wins when they host Versailles Thursday at 5 p.m.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity softball team did not manage the same success against Parkway Tuesday in a 15-6 defeat.

The Indians trailed 7-6 after scoring twice in the top of the fifth inning, but fell apart after that. They allowed eight runs in the bottom of the frame as the Panthers pulled away.

Tiff Gaerke took the defeat, allowing 15 runs — seven earned — in six innings. She struck out one batter.

Sam Staugler paced the offense with a double, three RBIs, one run and two stolen bases. Jodi Tobe tripled and drove in two runs.

Sandra Sudhoff singled, scored twice and stole two bases, Kristen Schwieterman had a double, a run and an RBI and Jill Wehrkamp added a single and a stolen base.

Fort boys still winless

The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team is still looking for its first victory after a 10-4 loss to the Parkway Panthers Tuesday.

The Indians trailed 8-0 — allowing five runs in the second inning — before getting on the board with three runs in the third.

Craig Garman suffered the defeat, allowing 10 runs — six earned — on 15 hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Kevin Schoenherr paced the offense with a couple of hits and a run. Jordan Staugler had the only other Tribe hit and added a stolen base.

Eric Weitzel drove in a run and scored once.

Kaup leads awards

Already honored with a litany of all-conference, all-district and all-state honors, Joscie Kaup added two more awards as she was among three Fort Recovery athletes who were recognized at the school’s annual scholastic banquet Monday.

Kaup, who earned All-State honors in volleyball and basketball, received the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award. The award is given each year to one male and female student for sportsmanship and integrity within the school and community.

She also was honored as an OHSAA scholar-athlete. Candidates for the award must have at least four varsity letters and hold the highest grade point average at the end of the first semester of their senior year.

Brandon Grieshop, a three-year letter winner in football, was also honored with the Archie Griffin Award. Jason Groff, who was a regional qualifier in cross country this year, earned the OHSAA scholar athlete award as well.[[In-content Ad]]
