Fort Recovery defeats 'Hawks

UNION CITY, Ohio — The Indians picked up a non-conference win Saturday. If they’re going to make another tournament run, they’ll have to go through a couple of league rivals.
The Division IV No. 10 Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team topped the host Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks 47-36 Saturday and got a first-round sectional match-up against St. Henry when the tournament brackets were released Sunday.
Kelly Nietfeld had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Tribe against Mississinawa Valley. Kylie Kahlig turned in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (14-3), who were up by 21 at halftime.
Shelby Rehmert tallied 14 points for the Blackhawks.
In the sectional tournament at Coldwater, FRHS will open against St. Henry (8-9) on Feb. 21 at 6:15 p.m. The winner will advance to take on Minster (13-3) in the sectional championship game on Feb. 25 at 6:15 p.m.
Kara Jutte scored 14 points to power Fort Recovery to a 52-23 junior varsity victory.

Stars fall to Woodlan
WOODBURN — Scott Hoeppner’s career night was not quite enough Saturday as the South Adams boys basketball team fell 70-59 to the host Woodlan Warriors.
Woodlan (5-11) overcame a 28-point effort from Hoeppner, pulling away as it outscored the Starfires 22-13 in the final period.
Hoeppner shot 11-of-17 from the field for his career-high total, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. He added three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Dustin Wanner had 14 points and eight assists for the Starfires (5-10), and Matt Alig finished with eight rebounds and three blocks.
Shawn McGettigen led three Warriors in double figures with 15 points. Brock Hines and Jaylin Bennett finished with 14 apiece, and Bennett also grabbed 11 rebounds.

COLDWATER, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys swim team finished as the runner-up at Saturday’s Coldwater Invitational.
The Indians scored 95 points to trail only Versailles (182) in the six-team field.
New Bremen was third with 68.
FRHS was last in the girls competition with 12 points while Versailles won with 205.
Andy Gray led the Tribe boys with their lone victory of the day, in 24.22 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. Marshall Hull was second in the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 4.39 seconds.
Mackinley Timmerman, Lane Hull, Marshall Hull and Gray were second in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.11, and Mitch Homan, Lane Hull, Marshall Hull and Gray were runners-up in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.38.
Olivia Acheson paced the girls with a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:41.34.[[In-content Ad]]
