Fort Recovery drops third straight MAC contest (04/28/04)

After opening league play with a victory the Fort Recovery baseball team lost its third straight Midwest Athletic Conference game Tuesday 10-0 to the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays.

The Tribe couldn’t get any offense going, finishing with just three hits in the contest.

St. Johns scored four times in the first inning and four more in the fourth to end the game in five innings.

C.J. Tobe slipped to 2-2 with the loss, allowing nine runs — five earned — on 11 hits in four-plus innings. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Tobe notched two of the Indians’ three hits in the defeat, including a double.

Dusty Tobe had the other hit.

Fort Recovery (6-10, 1-3 MAC) will host New Bremen Friday at 5 p.m.

Tribe JV stumbles

The big inning bit the Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team Tuesday. Trailing 7-6, the Indians allowed 15 third-inning runs for a 22-6 five-inning defeat to the St. Henry Redskins.

Fort Recovery (4-4) scored twice in each of the first three innings. St. Henry had five runs in the first and two in the second before exploding past the Tribe.

Lori Osterholt took the loss as she started and lasted 22/3 innings. Lindsay Sudhoff tossed one-third inning of relief, and Tiff Gaerke struck out four in one scoreless inning of relief.

Kelly Link doubled, drove in two runs, scored once and stole two bases for the Indians (4-4). Jennifer Link had a pair of hits, including a double, and stole a base.

Brittany Brackman finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Alicia Brockman and Betsy Overman added one hit, one run and one RBI apiece.

Tribe still winless

The Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays kept the Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team winless Tuesday, topping the Indians 14-1 in five innings. The Tribe is now 0-10 on the year.

Tony Diller took the loss, allowing five runs — four earned in one inning. He gave up four hits while walking two.

Diller singled and drove in the lone Fort Recovery run. Jesse Fortkamp and David Schmitt accounted for the other two Tribe hits.

FRMS track rolls

The Fort Recovery middle school track teams rolled to victory against Russia and Bradford Tuesday.

The boys team scored 78 points, with Russia second with 41 and Bradford third with 17. The girls team scored 54 points with Bradford second at 41 and Russia just behind with 39.

Matt Vagedes racked up three wins for the boys team, which didn’t enjoy the distance races but won just about everything else. All of the wins for Vagedes came in field events as he took the pole vault at eight feet, six inches, the long jump at 15 feet, eight inches and the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.

Luke Bihn added a pair of wins to complete the field-event sweep. He was first in the shot put — leading an event sweep — at 43 feet, three inches, and took the discus at 110 feet, 11 inches.

Michael Trobridge also had a pair of victories. He was first in the 100-meter dash in 12.42 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.30.

Eric Lamm was first in the 400-meter dash in 57.95, and Jordan Hess won the 200-meter hurdles in 33.38.

Fort Recovery also won the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay.

Anne Koesters was the only double winner for the girls team. She took the shot put with a toss of 28 feet, five inches and the discus at 77 feet, eight inches.

Heather Schmackers won the 200-meter hurdles in 34.68, and Mindy Vogel captured the 400-meter dash in 1-minute, 11.48 seconds. Tina Roessner took first in the 1,600-meter run in 6:10.66, and Rachel Tobe grabbed the high jump win at four feet, two inches.[[In-content Ad]]
