Fort Recovery freshman come back to top the Flyers (01/17/05)

Fort Roundup

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery freshman girls basketball team clamped down on defense in the second half for a 35-32 victory over the Marion Local Flyers.

The Indians trailed by nine at halftime. But they limited Marion Local, which scored 14 points in the second quarter, to just 11 points after the break. The Tribe scored 14 points of their own in the fourth quarter to erase the deficit and grab the win.

Beth May was the leading scorer for Fort Recovery with 13 points, and Jen Nietfeld joined her in double figures with 10.

Angie Wenning added seven points.

Marion ranked 2nd

Fort Recovery has already played two top-10 teams this year, but its biggest challenge comes Thursday.

The Indian girls basketball team will play at the Division IV No. 2 Marion Local Flyers (9-0) in a game which would keep it in the Midwest Athletic Conference race if it could pull the upset. The Flyers grabbed 13 first-place votes in the first Ohio AP poll of the season, finishing behind only 10-0 Berlin Hiland.

Fort Recovery has suffered losses this year to No. 5 Fort Loramie (9-1) and No. 7 Minster (8-2). Fort Loramie’s only loss this year came against Marion Local.

Also, two of the losses for the 7-4 Indian boys team this season have been against teams which opened in the state top 10.

The Tribe fell on the road to Division III No. 3 St. Henry (5-1) and Division III No. 5 Versailles (7-0).
