Fort Recovery honors 2003 fall athletes (11/14/03)

Fort Recovery High School held its awards banquet Thursday night to honor its 2003 fall athletes.

Among the award winners announced were the Midwest Athletic Conference All-Academic honorees. To earn the honor, athletes must have earned a varsity letter and maintained at least a 3.3 grade point average.

The volleyball team led the way with 10 members receiving all-academic honors. The were seniors Lindsay Gaerke, Julie Grube, Joscie Kaup, Briget Metzger, Jenn Stahl and Stefanie Westgerdes; junior Rachel Brackman, Krystal Rammel and Megan Wenning; and sophomore Jennalee Post.

Honorees from the football team were manager Nicole Able, Dusty Guggenbiller, Greg Faller, Craig Link, Scott Roessner, Stan Roessner, Nick Schwieterman, Nick Wehrkamp and Mark Willmann. Winners from the boys golf team were William Nofziger, Todd Post, Ryan Staugler, Dusty Tobe and Kurt Wendel.

Girls cross country team all-academic winners were Kimbra Hein, Marisa Minor, Leanne Pottkotter, Lindsay Sudhoff and Emily Wendel. From the boys team were Derick Faller, Eric Fullenkamp, Mitch Fullenkamp, Jason Groff, Derrick Huelskamp and Tom Roessner.

Each coach also gave individual awards, including the Most Improved Athlete, the Most Valuable Player and the Indian Award for team leadership.

Kaup, a three-year letter winner, earned the volleyball awards for best defense and MVP. She was also a second-team all-state selection.

Grube was a three-year letter winner, and Post won the most improved award. Metzger was the offensive player of the year, and Westgerdes was selected as the Indian Award winner.

Greg Faller led the list of football award winners, earning the Indian Award, the MVP and an award for best run defense. Brandon Grieshop, a three-year letter winner, also earned the award for best blocking, and Willmann was honored as the top offensive skill player.

Dusty Guggenbiller picked up the award for best pass defense, and Stan Roessner was the special teams player of the year. Earning a four-year letter for football cheerleading was April Steinbrunner.

Also, Faller, Guggenbiller and Brandon Grieshop earned All-MAC honorable mention this season.

The boys golf team had four three-year letter winners in Nofziger, Dusty Tobe, Kurt Wendel and Sean Kahlig. Dusty Tobe was named most improved, Nofziger won the Indian Award and Kurt Wendel was the team MVP.

Derick Faller, Groff and Tom Roessner each earned four-year letters from the boys cross country team. Dan Roessner won the most improved award, Derick Faller won the Indian Award, and Groff was the MVP.

Minor was the Indian Award winner from the girls cross country team, while Sudhoff was named the team’s MVP.

Fort tickets

Fort Recovery tickets for the 2003-04 basketball season are on sale.

Tickets are available in the high school office during regular office hours. Last year’s season-ticket holders have until Friday, Nov. 21st to renew their season tickets.

Season tickets for boys basketball are $50 for adults and $25 for students. For girls basketball they are $45 for adults and $25 for students.

Baseball tryouts

The D.C. Lightning baseball team for 10-year-olds is preparing for the 2004 season.

The team plays various area teams, as well as some from Kentucky and Ohio. Games are played under high school rules.

Turkey chase

Wayne and Union County Easter Seals will host a turkey chase Saturday. The event will include a 7k road race, a 2 1/2 mile historic walk, a one-mile fun run and a kiddie run.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. on the day of the event in the Centerville High School auxiliary gym west of the football field. The kiddie run will start at noon with the fun run at 12:30 p.m. and the 7K at 1 p.m.

Wrestling clinic

The Hoosier-Buckeye Wrestling Clinic for fourth through sixth graders has been scheduled for next month.

The seven-day clinic held at East Jay Middle School will begin Monday. It will be run by the East Jay and West Jay middle school wrestling coaches as well as former Jay County High School wrestlers.

The registration fee is $20 per athlete, and $15 for each additional athlete in the same family. The fee includes a T-shirt, handbook and a party at the end of the clinic.

Information about the clinic is available at all of the JCHS elementary schools.

Hockey league

The Wings-n-Wheels roller hockey league in Celina, Ohio is preparing for its third season.

The program is divided into two parts. There is a four-week camp for beginners and advanced players, and a 12-week regular season. The camp begins Dec. 2, and the regular season will start Dec. 29.

The league is open to boys and girls in grades kindergarten through 12. There will also be an adult league for those ages 16-and-older this year.

Games are played at The Zone, which is located inside the Junior Fair Building at the Mercer Country Fairgrounds.
